Rocket and mortar shell fire into Israel
  • On the evening of November 3, 2022, four rockets were fired from the Gaza Strip at Israel. One was intercepted by the Iron Dome aerial defense system and three fell inside the Gaza Strip (IDF spokesman’s Twitter account, November 3, 2022). No casualties or damage were reported. It was the first time rockets were fired at Israel since Operation Breaking Dawn in August 2022. No organization claimed responsibility for the rocket fire.
  • Hamas security forces began an investigation to discover who was behind the rocket fire. The source said the two suspects, both from Beit Hanoun in the northern Gaza Strip, belonged to a Salafist group. He claimed the Palestinian organizations were not involved in the rocket fire because they were committed to coordinating every response against Israel. He also claimed the rockets’ warheads were not carrying explosives, and if they had landed inside Israel they would not have caused damage (al-Quds, November 6, 2022).
IDF attacks in the Gaza Strip
  •   In response to the rocket fire Israeli Air Force aircraft attacked an underground Hamas facility in the central Gaza Strip used for developing and manufacturing rockets (IDF spokesman’s Twitter account, November 4, 2022). Blinken responded that the American administration was making an effort to defuse the current escalation. They agreed to remain in contact in the near future (Wafa, November 4, 2022).
  • According to the State Department website, November 5, 2022, “Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken spoke yesterday with…Mahmoud Abbas. PA prime minister visits Nablus
  •   On November 3, 2022, PA Prime Minister Muhammad Shtayyeh paid a visit to Nablus, accompanied by 30 foreign ambassadors and consuls. They were accompanied by Ibrahim Ramadan, governor of the Nablus district; Mahmoud al-Alul, deputy Fatah chairman; and a number of Palestinian government ministers. Muhammad Shtayyeh held a press conference in the Old City in Nablus, where he claimed the objective of the visit was to stress the Palestinians’ objections to Israel’s “collective punishment” of the residents of Nablus and the need to end the “occupation.” He praised the delegation of foreign diplomats and claimed the international community had to defend the Palestinians, implement UN resolutions and stop Israel’s anti-Palestinian actions (Wafa, November 3, 2022).

Palestinian reactions to Israeli election results
  • When the initial results of the Israeli elections were announcement Muhammad Shtayyeh claimed the rise of the extremist religious rightwing parties in Israel was the “natural consequence” of the increase in manifestations of extremism and racism in Israeli society. He claimed that for years the Palestinians had suffered because of Israel’s extremist political parties, manifested by the killings, detentions, establishment of settlements, invasion of [Palestinian] cities and villages, and allowing the settlers and IDF soldiers (“the occupation”) a free hand to carry out crimes and sabotage the two-state solution. He added that the election results confirmed that Israel was not a partner for peace (Dunia al-Watan, November 2, 2022).
  • Hamas spokesman Abd al-Latif al-Qanua claimed the elections would not give Israel legitimacy or change the nature of the conflict, and Israel would continue as “the occupying force that robs the Palestinians of their rights.” He said the Palestinians would continue realizing their legitimate right to “resist” [attack Israeli civilians and soldiers] with no connection to the elections or their results (Hamas website, November 1, 2022). On another occasion he said Hamas had no illusions regarding any future Israeli government or prime minister and the Palestinians’ best option was “resistance to all forms of the Zionist occupation.” He claimed the increase in extremism in Zionist society would be answered with the Palestinians’ firm stance and the increase of the Palestinian “resistance” until Israel (“the occupation”) had been expelled from the occupied lands (Dunia al-Watan, November 2, 2022).
  • Khaled al-Batash, a member of the PIJ’s political bureau, claimed the results of the elections proved, beyond any shadow of a doubt, how rightwing, extremist, racist and anti-Palestinian Israeli society was, and that the best response was the internal Palestinian reconciliation, escalating the “resistance,” and putting the Palestinian house in order based on a foundation of defending the “resistance” (Shehab, November 2, 2022).

It called on Britain and the United States to apologize to the Palestinians for the Balfour Declaration and to compensate them for turning them into refugees and denying them their rights to self-determination, independence and “return” (Wafa, November 2, 2022).
  • The PLO’s department of refugee affairs said in a statement that the Palestinians were still paying the price of the historical wrong done them by the Balfour Declaration. The department called on the international community to take responsibility for Palestinian history and right the wrong. It demanded Britain, “the most responsible for the crime,” apologize to the Palestinians, recognize their rights and recognize their state (website of the PLO’s department of refugee affairs, November 2, 2022).
