Overview
- On May 13, 2023, after five days of Operation Shield and Arrow, a ceasefire was reached. During the fighting terrorist operatives of the Palestinian organizations in the Gaza Strip, primarily the Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) fired 1,469 rockets and mortar shells at Israel: 131 landed in Israeli territory, 291 landed in the Gaza Strip and 39 fell into the sea. The Iron Dome aerial defense system intercepted 39 rockets and the David’s Sling aerial defense system intercepted two long-range rockets (IDF spokesman, May 14, 2023). Two people were killed in Israel and several dozen were wounded; extensive property damage was reported. Six prominent PIJ military-terrorist wing operatives died, killed in IDF targeted killings; the IDF carried out attacks on 422 terrorist targets.[1]
- When the fighting ended the ministry of health in Gaza published final data about the number of Palestinians killed and wounded in Operation Shield and Arrow; according to the data 33 Palestinians were killed, 22 fighting men, six children, three women and two non-combatant elderly men. Reportedly, 190 people were wounded, 64 of them children.
- The ministry of health published an infographic dividing the fatalities according to age and location at the time of their deaths. According to the information, three died in the northern district, 17 in the Gaza City district, on in the central Gaza Strip, seven in the Khan Yunis district and five in the Rafah district (ministry of health in Gaza Twitter account, May 13, 2023).

- The Palestinian media also posted notices with the pictures and names of the operatives who were killed; the notices differ (see below).
One of the notices (@qudsfeed Telegram channel, May 13, 2023).[2]
- The ITIC examination of the identities of the 33 fatalities and found the following:
- Twenty were military-terrorist operatives, 13 from the PIJ, six of them commanders, one field commander and four operatives in the Jerusalem Brigades’ rocket force.
- Five were Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) terrorist operatives and two were from the Mujahedeen Brigades, of a field commander.
- Two Palestinians were killed who were affiliated with terrorist organizations but did not actively participate in the fighting. One, affiliated with Hamas, was a neighbor of Tareq Izz al-Din, and the other, affiliated with Fatah, was killed by shrapnel from a rocket that misfired.
- Three women and six children were killed, most of them on the first day of fighting during the targeted killings of the three Jerusalem Brigades commanders.
- Regarding the source of the information, as opposed to past practice the ministry of health in Gaza did not report the names of the fatalities. Information was taking from the societal organizations in the Gaza Strip, such as al-Mezan Center for Human Rights, the Palestinian media and formal announcements issued by the military-terrorist wings themselves.
