The Birth of Hezbollah

The birth of the Hezbollah movement did not happen following the Israeli invasion of Lebanon in the summer of 1982, as many tend to think. The decision to establish the movement was made in Iran in 1979 by the Revolutionary Leadership Council headed by Imam Khomeini with the aim of exporting the Islamic revolution to the Arab region. The establishment process was led by the Iranian ambassador in Damascus beginning in the summer of 1981 and Israel's invasion of Lebanon was a catalyst for Hezbollah's development. The members of the movement are loyal to Iran and receive military and economic support from Iran through the Quds Force of the Revolutionary Guards.

Spotlight on Global Jihad (June 8-15, 2022)

The relatively low level of ISIS activity around the world continued. Most of the activity focused on the Sinai Peninsula and Africa. This week, the Egyptian army and the Sinai Tribal Union continued to mop up the region west of Rafah and the Sheikh Zuweid region Syria: clashes between Kurdish SDF and ISIS forces resumed in Deir ez-Zor-Al-Mayadeen, Al-Hasakah and Al-Raqqah. Africa: ISIS continued to operate at relatively high intensity in Nigeria, Mozambique, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. At least 100 civilians were killed in northern Burkina Faso, near the border with Niger, apparently by elements affiliated with ISIS or Al-Qaeda.

Spotlight on Global Jihad (June 18-24, 2020)

The ceasefire is being maintained in the Idlib region of northern Syria, but there has been an increase in the intensity of local incidents. ISIS’s activity around the globe continues at low intensity, a trend that has been going on for several weeks. At the same time, disruptions of ISIS’s media system continue, The Iraq Province continues to be ISIS’s most active province.

Hezbollah maintains an extensive network of social foundations in the Shiite community in Lebanon. These foundations deal with healthcare, education, finance, welfare, and media. They support Hezbollah’s military infrastructure. They also serve as a means of disseminating Hezbollah’s ideology and strengthening its position among the Shiite community and in Lebanon in general.
