Overview[1]
  • Nasser Hospital in Khan Yunis is a government hospital which belongs to the Hamas-controlled the ministry of health in the Gaza Strip. It is considered the largest hospital in the southern Gaza Strip and the second largest after Shifa Hospital in Gaza City; it provides medical services to approximately 800,000 local residents. It was established in 1960, and over the years has undergone several renovations and expansions. Today the complex includes Nasser, Yassin and al-Tahrir hospitals.
  • Since the beginning of the war, the hospital has received a large number of casualties, as well as many local residents who shelter there. The hospital currently operates at full capacity, which is also why Jordan established a field hospital in the Khan Yunis area: to reduce the burden on the hospital. With the temporary ceasefire in Gaza (as of November 24, 2023), Nasser Hospital began receiving sick and wounded patients who were evacuated from hospitals in Gaza City and the northern Gaza Strip. In addition, due to the activity of the IDF forces at Shifa Hospital, Dr. Ashraf al-Qidra, spokesman for the ministry of health in the Gaza Strip, transferred his activity to the Nasser Hospital in Khan Yunis. He may also have moved out of concern that he might be detained by the IDF forces in Gaza, like Dr. Muhammad Abu Salmiya, the director of Shifa Hospital, who was recently detained.
  • Since the beginning of the war and even before the temporary ceasefire, the hospital received several shipments of medical aid from the International Red Cross which included equipment for the operating rooms and the emergency room. Apparently, the hospital was given priority by international organizations since it was the largest hospital in the southern Gaza Strip.
  • Videos and live broadcasts from Nasser Hospital during the war clearly showed Hamas policemen at the main entrance to the hospital. There are always a number of white Toyota pickups at the site, apparently to secure it and maintain public order.
  • So far it is uncertain whether and what uses Hamas has made of Nasser Hospital facilities. However, following the IDF forces’ exposure of a large number of tunnels, control rooms and weapons in hospitals in the northern Gaza Strip and Shifa Hospital in Gaza City, it cannot be ruled out that Hamas is also using Nasser Hospital, a civilian facility, for its military-terrorist needs.[2]

  • Nasser Hospital is the largest hospital in the southern Gaza Strip and provides medical services to a population of approximately 800,000 (Facebook page of Nasser Hospital in Khan Yunis, March 4, 2020). It belongs to the Hamas-controlled the ministry of health in the Gaza Strip, which changed its name to the Nasser Medical Complex, although everyone still calls it Nasser Hospital. Its construction began in 1957 and it opened its doors in 1960, when the Egyptians administered the Strip. In 1994, a new three-story building called al-Tahrir Hospital was built in the complex. In 2016, the hospital was renovated thanks to donations from residents of the city, and in 2017, it underwent another renovation and a cardiology department was established at a cost of $284,000, a donation from the Qatar Red Crescent (Wikipedia in Arabic, November 27, 2023).The hospital director is Dr. Nahed Abu Taima and the ER director is Dr. Muhammad Qandil.

  • Recently, Dr. Ashraf al-Qidra, spokesman for the Hamas-controlled ministry of health in the Gaza Strip, was interviewed from Nasser Hospital for the first time since the beginning of the war (al-Ghad TV, November 20, 2023). His interviewer was an al-Ghad TV correspondent and the interview was apparently conducted after the activities of the IDF forces in Shifa Hospital in Gaza City and after the detention of Dr. Muhammad Abu Salmiya, Shifa director.

Hamas police at the hospital entrance
  • Videos and live broadcasts from Nasser Hospital since the beginning of the war show the presence of uniformed Hamas policemen at the main entrance to the hospital. A number of white Toyota pickups are regularly seen parked there, apparently to secure the site and to maintain public order. For example, behind Ibrahim Qanan, a correspondent for al-Ghad TV, who often reports from the main entrance to the hospital, Hamas police and their vehicles can be seen (al-Ghad TV, November 23, 2023).

  • Dr. Nahed Abu Taima, the hospital director, said that during the temporary ceasefire, the hospital had received hundreds of sick and wounded patients who arrived following the evacuation of the hospitals in Gaza City and the northern Gaza Strip. In addition, he said, a large number of people from the northern Gaza Strip came to the hospital complex to take shelter. He said the hospital was occupied beyond its capacity (Facebook page of Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis, November 27, 2023).
