Spotlight on Global Jihad (February 22-28, 2018)

The focus of the fighting in Syria has been moved to the area of eastern Ghouta (east of Damascus. The shift in the focus of the fighting to eastern Ghouta gave a timeout to the rebel organizations in the Idlib region. In various provinces in Iraq, the Iraqi security forces continue to exert pressure on local ISIS networks. The Jordanian General Intelligence Directorate uncovered an ISIS network of 17 operatives.

News of Terrorism and the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict (February 21 – 27, 2018)

In Judea, Samaria and the Gaza Strip demonstrations and riots continue, although small in scope. The most serious event was in Jericho, where a Palestinian was killed during an Israeli security force activity. During January and February 2018 the Israeli security forces detained three Arab Israelis from Umm al-Fahm. The three had planned to carry out a terrorist attack on the Temple Mount similar to the one carried out in July 2017 which killed two Israeli policemen. The humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip continues to be serious.

Spotlight on Global Jihad (February 15-21, 2018)

In the Euphrates River area north of Albukamal, ISIS operatives continued intensive guerrilla warfare against the SDF forces and the local Syrian forces. ISIS continues to conduct guerrilla warfare against the Iraqi security forces and Shiite militias (the Popular Mobilization) in the various provinces in Iraq. The Egyptian security forces continue their operation (Sinai 2018) against outposts of ISIS’s Sinai Province. The Egyptian operation is focused on northern Sinai.

News of Terrorism and the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict (February 14 -20, 2018)

This past week events focused on the attack in the Gaza Strip, the most serious since Operation Protective Edge. In response, IDF tanks fired at a Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) observation post and Israeli Air Force aircraft attacked 18 "terrorist targets." The incident was another example of the erosion of the relative calm between Hamas and Israel since the end of Operation Protective Edge.

Spotlight on Iran (February 4 – February 18, 2018)

Tehran continues to deny Israeli reports about Iranian involvement in the clashes last weekend in Syria. Meanwhile, senior Iranian officials continue to emphasize that Iran sees the continuation of its involvement in Syria as a vital national interest and that its presence in the country is based on a formal request of the Damascus government. In the Iraqi arena, Iran continues to try and promote its economic role as part of Iraq’s forthcoming reconstruction.

Spotlight on Global Jihad (February 8-14, 2018)

The Syrian forces continued to mop up the rural areas east of the Hama-Aleppo Highway, as part of the campaign to take over the Idlib area. In the eastern sector of the Euphrates River, north of Albukamal, clashes continued between SDF operatives (with Coalition air support) and ISIS operatives. ISIS has apparently returned to high-level operational capability in this sector, while the SDF fighters are finding it hard to provide a suitable response to the intensive guerrilla operations that ISIS is carrying out against them. In the Deir ez-Zor area, there was a violent confrontation between the SDF forces (with Coalition air support) and a Syrian tribal militia force operating on behalf of the Syrian regime.
