This past week the Israeli security forces continued counterterrorism activity in Judea and Samaria.  The Gaza Strip was relatively quiet. . A Hamas delegation led by Isma'il Haniyeh visited Lebanon and met with Lebanese government officials, Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah and representatives of the Palestinian organizations. The Palestinian Authority (PA) is preparing for the visit of American President Joe Biden. Another wave of the coronavirus has begun, with a rise in the number of cases in Judea, Samaria and the Gaza Strip.

The military-terrorist wing of Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) held military exercise in the Gaza Strip to convey threats to Israel.

On June 20, 2022, the Jerusalem Brigades, the military-terrorist wing of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) held a large exercise in the Gaza Strip. According to PIJ sources, the exercise mainly focused on firing rockets and artillery at targets at sea. Apparently the military-terrorist wings of the organizations in the Gaza Strip are keeping a low profile and maintaining relative quiet to prevent another round of combat with Israel at this time. The exercises, with their displays of force and military capabilities, are another way of threatening Israel and part of the so-called "balance of deterrence," including threats from Ibrahim al-Madhoun to attack Israel's offshore oil rig (see below).

Spotlight on Terrorism and the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict (May 25-31, 2022)

On May 29, 2022, Israel held the traditional Flag March, which passed through east Jerusalem and the Damascus Gate. There were almost no exceptional incidents despite warnings and threats issued by Hamas and other terrorist organizations. On the morning of May 29, 2022, before the Flag March, a few hundred heavily guarded Jews entered the Temple Mount compound. Palestinians in Judea, Samaria and east Jerusalem rioted, and two young Palestinians were killed while clashing with Israeli security forces.

News of Terrorism and the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict (May 11-17, 2022)

This past week there was a stabbing attack south of Nablus and a Palestinian threw a concrete block at an Israeli vehicle north of Ramallah. The Israeli security forces continued intensive counterterrorism activities, detaining Palestinians suspected of terrorist activity and seizing weapons. During the activities a Border Police special forces fighter was killed. Two Palestinians were also killed in the riots, Shireen Abu Akleh, an al-Jazeera reporter, and Daoud Zubeidi, the brother of imprisoned Zakaria Zubeidi, was mortally wounded and later died. Their deaths caused Palestinians to riot against Israeli security forces. Palestinians in Judea, Samaria and the Gaza Strip marked Nakba Day.

News of Terrorism and the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict (May 4-10, 2022)

Two terrorist attacks were carried out this past week: an attack in Elad where the terrorists used an axe and a knife (three civilians murdered and four wounded) and a stabbing attack at the Damascus Gate in east Jerusalem in which a Border Police fighter was wounded. An attempted terrorist attack in Tekoa was prevented. The Palestinians were enraged when Jews were allowed to enter the Temple Mount compound. A Hamas delegation visited Russia and met with the deputy foreign minister and the Grand Mufti of Russia. After the IDF began a military exercise on May 9, 2022, the terrorist organizations in the Gaza Strip and Hezbollah raised their level of alert in preparation for a possible confrontation with Israel.

Terrorist attack in Elad. Three Israeli civilians killed and four wounded. Hamas again praises and encourages

On the evening of May 5, 2022, Israel's Independence Day, two Palestinians from a village near Jenin carried out a terrorist attack in the central Israeli city of Elad, using an axe and a knife. They killed three civilians and wounded four, two of them critically, beginning their killing spree in the late evening. Although the two terrorists apparently were not specifically directed by an established organization, the attack in Elad came during a Ramadan-long Hamas propaganda campaign encouraging terrorist attacks.
