It is approximately two weeks since the Trump recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of the State of Israel, and demonstrations of rage continue in the Palestinian arena, although with less intensity than what some of the Palestinians hoped for. Demonstrations and protest meetings continue in the Arab and Muslim states, especially Jordan and Turkey (where last week a meeting of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation was held).

PIJ Tunnel Destroyed in Israeli Territory and Mortar Shell Attack in Retaliation

On November 30, 2017, an exception barrage of 10-12 mortar shells was fired at an IDF post and IDF soldiers from the northern Gaza Strip. The attack was carried out by the Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) in retaliation for the destruction of a tunnel entering Israeli territory a month ago. PIJ spokesmen said the mortar shell fire did not settle the account with Israel and that the war against it continued.

This past week there was a stabbing attack in the southern Israeli city of Arad. On November 30, 2017, in an exceptional attack, between ten and twelve mortar shells were fired at an IDF post and IDF soldiers north of the Gaza Strip. Difficulties continue in implementing the internal Palestinian reconciliation. In light of reports in the media that the president of the United States is planning to declare recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and relocate the American embassy, the PA initiated a campaign to exert pressure on the Americans.

News of Terrorism and the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict (November 8-14, 2017)

In response to threats issued by the Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) to exact revenge for the blowing up of its tunnel and the death of operatives, General Yoav Mordechai, the Israeli Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories (COGAT), warned that if the organization attacked Israel, Israel would react with might and determination. The PIJ said in an announcement that it had the right to respond to any act of "aggression" and called Israel's threats "a declaration of war." The transfer of authority in the Gaza Strip is proceeding according to the Fatah-Hamas reconciliation agreement.

News of Terrorism and the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict (November 1-7, 2017)

This past week in Judea and Samaria rallies, marches and demonstrations were held to mark the centenary of the Balfour Declaration. The IDF announced it was holding the bodies of the five Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) operatives who had been trapped when the IDF blew up a terrorist tunnel.
