News of Terrorism and the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict (April 13-26, 2022)

The week during which Israel celebrated Passover, the Muslims Ramadan and the Christians Easter was fraught with tension in east Jerusalem, especially on the Temple Mount after Palestinians tried to prevent Jewish worshippers from conducting prayers at the site. Given the tension in east Jerusalem, Palestinians in the Gaza Strip fired five rockets at Israel, four of them landing inside Israel, one of them damaging a house in the southern Israeli city of Sderot. In addition, a rocket was launched from Lebanon at the western Galilee, apparently by Palestinians in south Lebanon. On April 15, 2022, a young woman carried out a stabbing attack in the northern Israeli city of Haifa, wounding one man. In Judea and Samaria an exceptionally large number of rocks and Molotov cocktails were thrown at Israeli vehicles driving on the roads.

News of Terrorism and the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict (April 6-12, 2022)

This past week terrorist attacks continued. The most serious was a shooting attack on Dizengoff Street in Tel Aviv on April 7, 2022, in which three Israelis were killed. The shooter, like the perpetrator of the attack in Bnei Brak, was an operative of the al-Aqsa Martyrs' Brigades, Fatah's military-terrorist wing, from the Jenin area. There were also two stabbing attacks, one at the Cave of the Patriarchs in Hebron, on April 10, 2022, and the other in the southern coastal city of Ashqelon on April 12, 2022. Both terrorists were shot and killed. Israel carried out counterterrorism activities in a number of locations in Judea and Samaria, seizing weapons. Despite the terrorist attacks, Israel had not cancelled measures put in place for the Palestinians for the Muslim religious month of Ramadan, with the exception of restrictions placed on the residents of the Jenin area.

Palestinian responses to the terrorist attack in Tel Aviv and to the subsequent activities of the Israeli security forces in Judea and Samaria

At around 21:00 on April 7, 2022, a Palestinian armed with a handgun went to a crowded bar on Dizengoff Street in the center of Tel Aviv. He shot at patrons sitting at tables outside, killing two, mortally wounding a third and wounding six others, three of them critically. The terrorist, a Palestinian from the Jenin refugee camp, fled the scene. It was the fourth deadly terrorist attack in an Israeli city in two and a half weeks. The attacks killed 14 people and wounded scores more. All four were carried out by lone-wolf terrorists who were not operatives of established terrorist organizations. Immediately after the attack in Tel Aviv the Israeli security forces began detaining suspects in the Jenin region, searching for weapons and apprehending members of the terrorist's family. Hamas and the Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) continued encouraging the residents of Judea and Samaria to carry out terrorist attacks but so far have been careful not to carry out attacks from the Gaza Strip.

Palestinian reactions to Israeli security force activities following the terrorist attack in Bnei Brak

Following the terrorist attack in Bnei Brak, the Israeli security forces began operating in Judea and Samaria, primarily in the Jenin region, to detain Palestinians suspected of terrorist activity and to prevent further attacks. Five Palestinians were killed, three of them operatives in a Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) terrorist squad en route to carrying out an attack inside Israeli territory.

Palestinian Terrorism, 2021: Summary, Types and Trends

Despite Operation Guardian of the Walls in May 2021, since 2017 there has been no consistent change in the level of Palestinian popular terrorism in Judea, Samaria and Jerusalem. During 2021 Palestinian terrorists carried out 54 significant terrorist attacks, compared with 40 in 2020, 34 in 2019 and 55 in 2015. Three Israelis (civilians) were killed, similar to 2020, and 34 Israelis were wounded; 46 in 2020. Twenty terrorist attacks were carried out in Greater Jerusalem and one in Jaffa. In 2021 the number of stabbing attacks rose and there were 30 (about 56% of the total), compared with 19 in 2020 (48% of the total). There were 12 shooting attacks (22% of the total), eight vehicular ramming attacks (about 15% of the total), three combined attacks and one incursion into an Israeli community. In addition, there were about 1,700 rock-throwing incidents and 350 involving Molotov cocktails.

News of Terrorism and the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict (January 19-25, 2022)

This past week there was an increase in incidents involving Palestinians throwing rocks and Molotov cocktails at Israeli vehicles, IDF posts and the fences of Israeli communities in Judea and Samaria. While in the Gaza Strip, Mohammed al-Emadi, chairman of Qatar's National Committee for the Reconstruction of Gaza, signed an agreement companies manufacturing and distributing electricity in the Gaza Strip. In the Gaza Strip the Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) organized a demonstration in support of the Houthis in Yemen. Hussein al-Sheikh, chairman of the Palestinian Authority (PA) commission of civilian affairs, met with Israeli Foreign Minister Yair Lapid. In Judea, Samaria and the Gaza Strip there was a significant rise in the number of active coronavirus cases, especially of the omicron variant.
