The Tenth Round of Escalation in the Gaza Strip: What Next?

On February 23 and 24, 2020, there was another significant round of escalation in the Gaza Strip, the tenth since the beginning of the return marches (March 30, 2018). It was instigated by the Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) in retaliation for the IDF's killing of one of its operatives who was placing an IED near the border security fence and the subsequent removal of his body with an IDF bulldozer.

News of Terrorism and the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict (February 19 –25, 2020)

This past week terrorist events focused on another round of escalation from the Gaza Strip, initiated by the Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) (February 23-24, 2020). More than 110 rockets were fired at the Israeli communities near the Gaza Strip and the southern Israeli cities of Sderot and Ashqelon. The rocket fire began two days after Israel announced unprecedented measures to ease daily life in the Gaza Strip, part of the understandings for an arrangement. The round of escalation was preceded by two PIJ attempts to attack IDF soldiers near the security fence in the Khan Yunis region. In Judea and Samaria popular terrorism continues, focusing on stabbing attacks in Jerusalem.

A New Round of Escalation in the Gaza Strip (Updated to February 24, 2020, 14:00)

On February 23 and 24, 2020, there was another round of escalation in the Gaza Strip. It began on the morning of February 23 when IDF forces killed a terrorist operative from the military wing of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ). He was one of two Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) operatives placing an IED near the security fence. The other operative was wounded. The body of the dead operative was removed by the IDF.

Iranian support for Palestinian terrorism: Distribution of Iranian funds to shaheeds’ families in the Gaza Strip by PIJ-affiliated Al-Ansar Charity Association

In late January 2020, the Al-Ansar Charity Association, affiliated with the Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ), distributed Iranian financial support to families of shaheeds killed from the beginning of the Second Intifada (2000) until Operation Protective Edge (2014).

News of Terrorism and the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict (February 5 – 11, 2020)

This past week was characterized by increased violence from the Gaza Strip and an increase in popular terrorism attacks and violent clashes between Palestinians and Israeli security forces. This past week five rockets and two mortar shells were fired at Israel from the Gaza Strip. In Judea and Samaria there has been a rise in the number of popular terrorism attacks. In the diplomatic arena Mahmoud Abbas and senior Palestinian Authority figures continue their activities in various Arab and international forums to enlist opposition to the Trump plan. In the UN Security Council the Palestinians failed to enlist sufficient support for a resolution against the plan.

This past week as well acts of violence from the Gaza Strip continued: balloon clusters were launched into Israeli territory a rocket was launched into Israeli territory and a hand grenade or IED was thrown at an IDF force. The Palestinians rushed to reject Trump's "deal of the century" plan. The Palestinian media reported a series of planned protest activities in Judea, Samaria and the Gaza Strip
