Escalation in Israel’s South – Rocket Fire from the Gaza Strip Updated to 12:00 noon, May 11, 2021

The hostilities between Israel and the Palestinians in Jerusalem escalated to a new height on May 10, 2021, the day Israel celebrated Jerusalem Day. Hamas' military-terrorist wing issued an ultimatum to Israel, calling for the removal of Israel's security forces from the al-Aqsa mosque precinct and Sheikh Jarrah in east Jerusalem, and the release of all the Palestinian terrorists imprisoned in Israeli jails, by 18:00. When its conditions were not met, Hamas fired seven rockets at the Jerusalem region.

Terrorist attacks: This past week three terrorist attacks were attempted or carried out in Judea and Samaria. Palestinian Authority (PA) elections: At a meeting of the Palestinian leadership Mahmoud Abbas announced the postponement of the Palestinian Legislative Council (PLC) elections, which were supposed to be held on May 22, 2021. East Jerusalem: Media coverage continues of east Jerusalem and the "victory" of the Palestinians who struggled to have the barriers removed. The international arena: The EU parliament voted to condemn UNRWA for the incitement to hatred and violence in textbooks used in its schools in the Palestinian territories.

News of Terrorism and the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict (April 20-27, 2021)

Coronavirus: The incidence of active coronavirus cases in the Gaza Strip declined this past week although the rate of infection remains high. Medical sources say they can cope with the situation and call on Gazans to be vaccinated. In Judea and Samaria the decline in the number of coronavirus cases continues. Clashes in Jerusalem: This past week tension in east Jerusalem between the Palestinians and Israeli security forces rose, mainly near the Damascus Gate. On April 25, 2021, the Israeli police announced they would remove the barriers; since then relative quiet has prevailed, although the situation is still volatile. Palestinian Authority (PA) elections: After Fatah splintered into three political factions with separate election slates, and the public opinion polls do not predict a landslide victory for any candidate put forward by Mahmoud Abbas, the PA is currently weighing the possibility of cancelling the Palestinian Legislative Council (PLC) elections.

Tensions peak during Ramadan, including confrontations in Jerusalem and rocket fire from the Gaza Strip targeting Israel’s south

Since the beginning of the Muslim religious month of Ramadan on April 13, 2021, tensions between Palestinians, the Israeli security forces and right wing Israeli activists have risen in east Jerusalem. In a number of instances young Arabs attacked Jewish passersby. The tension in Jerusalem spread to the Gaza Strip, and 41 rockets were fired at the Israeli communities near the Gaza Strip (36 on April 23, 2021, two on April 24, 2021, and three on April 25, 2021). Ten rockets were intercepted by the Iron Dome aerial defense system and 31 rockets fell in open areas.

News of Terrorism and the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict (April 14 – 20, 2021)

Coronavirus: In the Gaza Strip the scope of the infection decreased although the rate of positive tests is high (37%), and the number of Gazans hospitalized, including those in serious or critical condition, is very high. Increasing the strictness of preventive measures is under consideration. In Judea and Samaria there has been a decrease in infection but medical sources note it does not indicate an improvement in the situation. The Gaza Strip: This past week rockets were fired from the Gaza Strip into Israel territory, one on each of two consecutive days. No casualties or damage were reported. Judea and Samaria: There was relatively quiet this past week, with the exception of Palestinians who rioted against police at the Nablus Gate in east Jerusalem.

News of Terrorism and the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict (April 7 – 13, 2021)

Coronavirus: The number of active cases in the Gaza Strip continues rising sharply. Senior public health figures are worried by the Gazans' disdain for health guidelines and restrictions and threaten they will impose a general lockdown. In Judea and Samaria the number of active cases continues declining. Terrorist attacks: This past week Palestinians continued throwing rocks and a larger than usual number of Molotov cocktails and IEDs at Israeli vehicles driving on the roads in Judea and Samaria. Palestinian Authority (PA) elections: Preparations continue for holding elections in the PA territories. The Gaza Strip: An Egyptian security delegation paid a visit to the Gaza Strip and met with senior Hamas figures. The Palestinian Authority (PA): The Biden administration announced its intention to renew economic aid to the PA, reversing the last three years of American foreign policy.
