The Spread of COVID-19 in Judea, Samaria and the Gaza Strip (Updated to August 31, 2020)

Since the first four cases of Covid-19 were detected inside the Gaza Strip on August 24, 2020, there has been a significant increase in the number of new infections. On August 31, 2020, the total number of active cases stood at 280, 243 inside the Gaza Strip and 37 who returned from abroad. As of August 31, 2020 there have been four deaths. The number of active cases in the Palestinian Authority (PA) also rose this past week: 2,843 new cases were detected, up from 2,324 a week ago.

The Spread of Covid-19 Inside the Gaza Strip; Balloon Terrorism Continues (Updated to August 27, 2020)

On August 24, 2020, four active Covid-19 cases were detected in one family the al-Maghazi refugee camp in the central Gaza Strip. It was the first instance of coronavirus infection inside Gaza since the first case was detected on March 21, 2020. A short time later more cases were detected in various locations, and as of August 27, 2020, 40 active cases of Covid-19 had been detected inside the Gaza Strip.

News of Terrorism and the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict (August 19 – 25, 2020)

This past week Hamas-initiated tension and the deterioration of the security situation in the Gaza Strip continued. The events focused on the launching of IED and incendiary balloons which daily cause dozens of fires near Israeli communities. On August 24, 2020 four active cases of Covid-19 were detected in the al-Maghazi refugee camp in the central Gaza Strip; all four were members of the same family. They were the first Covid-19 cases detected inside the Gaza Strip which were not brought in through the crossings. Will the worsening of the Covid-19 crisis in Gaza relax the current tension or increase Hamas pressure on Israel to the point of escalation? So far there is no answer.

The Spread of COVID-19 in Judea, Samaria and the Gaza Strip (updated to August 24, 2020)

This week, there has been a certain increase in the number of cases identified In the Palestinian Authority (PA). However, the trend towards flattening the COVID-19 curve has continued (see graph). This past week, 2,653 new cases were identified (compared to 2,324 last week). According to the PA Health Ministry, there are currently 7,177 active COVID-19 cases (as at August 24, 2020); 3,489 in the Hebron district, about 49% of the total number. Of the active cases, 28 patients are in ICUs and five are on ventilators. There have been 147 deaths, up from 113 last week. In the Gaza Strip, 25 new cases were identified.

Continuing deterioration of the security situation along the Gaza Strip border (updated to August 24, 2020)

This past week the deterioration of security along the Gaza border continued, initiated by Hamas: the launching of IED and incendiary balloons continued (causing dozens of fires daily), the IDF responded to balloon terrorism with aerial attacks and tank fire at Hamas facilities and posts, and Hamas and the other terrorist organizations responded to the IDF attacks with sporadic rocket fire (24 rockets have been fired since the beginning of August).

Despite Covid-19, the Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) held its annual summer camps, where Palestinian youths acquire paramilitary skills

This summer the mobilization unit of the PIJ's military wing held its annual summer camps for youths in the Gaza Strip, despite dealing with the fight against coronavirus infection. This year the camps were called the "al-amin ("the secretary") camps," in memory of Ramadan Abdallah Shalah, the PIJ secretary general who died on June 6, 2020. According to a report, the youths acquired paramilitary skills and heard lectures on security and "educational" topics.
