On October 8, 2018, a mass riot was held near the border in the northern Gaza Strip. The military-terrorist wing of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) held a mass military display in Gaza City, where it exhibited its weapons, including "a new type of rocket" whose specifications were not given.

Summary of Events Along the Gaza Strip Border

As they have every Friday since March 30, 2018, on October 5 Gazans held "return marches" along the Gaza Strip-Israel border. About 20 thousand Gazans participated in riots, throwing stones and burning tires. They also threw hand grenades and IEDs at the Israeli security forces. Several rioters tried to cross the security fence into Israeli territory.

The trend toward escalation continues in the Gaza Strip, with an increase in the frequency of riots and propaganda events and in the level of their accompanying violence. The humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip continues to deteriorate. In internal Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) elections, Ziyad al-Nakhalah was chosen as the organization's new secretary general. He replaces Ramadan Shalah, who had been in a coma since April and is hospitalized in Lebanon.

Since mid-September 2018 Hamas has raised the level of its anti-Israel violence. It increased the number of riots and propaganda demonstrations along the border and their accompany violence. Events peaked during the "return marches" on Friday September 21 and 28, 2018, attended on both days by up to 20,000 Gazans.

There are about 200,000 residents in the city having the right to vote for the municipality, who since 1967 have boycotted the local elections. Further proof of the “dual identity” of operatives in the Gaza Strip security services

On September 5, 2018, the Hamas-controlled Interior Ministry in the Gaza Strip issued an announcement on the death of Muqaddam (Lieutenant Colonel) Abdel Rahim Ahmad Ahmad Abbas (Abu Abbas). He had served as chief of Security and Operations in the Bomb Disposal General Department of the Palestinian Police. Concurrently with the announcement of the Interior Ministry, the Hamas military wing published a death notice of its own on Abdel Rahim Abbas’s death, noting that he had served as a Hamas military wing field commander.
