Palestinians carried out two shooting attacks in Nablus and in Shavei Shomron, northwest of Nablus. A stabbing attack was prevented when a Palestinian armed with a knife was detained at the Reihan Crossing. The Israeli security forces continued and increased their counterterrorism activities in Judea and Samaria. There was also an increase in attempts to smuggle weapons into Judea and Samaria. The Gaza Strip remained relatively quiet.

Operation Breaking Dawn from the Palestinian Perspective

The Palestinian media, the PIJ, Hamas and Iran reported Operation Breaking Dawn as a success for the Gaza Strip. However, various elements in the Gaza Strip criticized the PIJ. On the other hand, the PIJ criticized Hamas for not taking an active part in the fighting.

Spotlight on Terrorism and the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict (August 18-23, 2022)

This past week two shooting attacks targeted Israeli buses, no casualties were reported. A shooting attack was prevented at the Eliahu Crossing, south of Qalqilya. Israeli security forces continued carrying out counterterrorism activities in Judea and Samaria. Two Palestinians were killed in IDF activities and a Palestinian died after having been wounded two weeks previously. The Gaza Strip remained relatively quiet. The claim made by Mahmoud Abbas during his visit to Germany, that Israel allegedly carried out "fifty holocausts" of the Palestinian people, continues provoking reactions.

Spotlight on Terrorism and the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict (August 9-17, 2022)

A shooting attack near the Western Wall in Jerusalem left nine people wounded, three of them critically. A young Palestinian tried to stab an Israeli security force fighter; he was shot and killed. Ibrahim al-Nablusi, who was wanted for carrying out a shooting attack, was killed in Nablus. Three other Palestinians were killed in IDF activities in Nablus and Hebron. The Gaza Strip was relatively quiet. Sources in the Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) and Hamas summed up Operation Breaking Dawn as a success.

An examination of the names of the fatalities in Operation Breaking Dawn reveals that about half of them were terrorist operatives

The ITIC examination into the identity of the 49 fatalities distinguished between 38 fatalities resulting from IDF strikes and 11 resulting from rocket misfires. Of the 38 fatalities from IDF strikes, 20 (52%) were identified as terrorist operatives, 12 (31%) were identified as operatives of the PIJ’s military wing, including the two senior operatives who were eliminated in targeted killings, one Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine (DFLP) operative, four Hamas operatives and three Fatah operatives (it is unclear how involved the Hamas and Fatah operatives were involved in the military activity).

Escalation in the Gaza Strip – Summary of Operation Breaking Dawn (August 5-7, 2022)

After three days of rocket and mortar fire from the Gaza Strip and IDF attacks, the Egyptian negotiator, Israel and the Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) declared a ceasefire, which went into effect on August 7, 2022, at 23:30. During the three days of the operation 1,100 rockets were launched at Israel. During the operation the IDF carried out 170 attacks on PIJ terrorist targets. Among the targets were senior Jerusalem Brigades commanders.
