News of Terrorism and the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict (April 22 – 27, 2020)

This past week events focused on the combined vehicular-stabbing attack at a roadblock southeast of Jerusalem and on the continuing threats (so far not carried out) from the Gaza Strip to renew the launching of IED and incendiary balloons. Apparently the spread of coronavirus in Judea, Samaria and the Gaza Strip is still under control. In March 2020 the Israeli security forces exposed a Hamas network whose operatives were planning terrorist attacks in Jerusalem and the Ramallah region.

The fight against COVID-19 in the Gaza Strip (updated to April 26, 2020)

According to reports from the Hamas Health Ministry in the Gaza Strip, the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases over the past week rose from 13 to 17. Two sick Palestinians were identified at the Rafah Crossing and sent to isolation. Ten patients have recovered and seven are still in isolation. Up to now, Hamas’s handling of the spread of the virus is (still) under control.

What is the true reason for the shortcomings of the medical system in the Gaza Strip?

The Hamas movement is accompanying its fight against COVID-19 with a campaign of blaming and threatening Israel. At the core of the campaign is blame for Israel for [allegedly] destroying the medical system in the Gaza Strip, preventing it from effectively coping with the virus and endangering the lives of the two million people living in Gaza. Senior Hamas figures, among them Yahya al-Sinwar, head of the Hamas political bureau in the Gaza Strip, threatened that if a shortage of ventilators and other medical equipment develops, Hamas will use force against Israel and "make six million Israeli settlers [sic] stop breathing."

Since the outbreak of COVID-19 Judea and Samaria have been relatively quiet, with the exception of the stones and Molotov cocktails thrown at Israeli vehicles. The Gaza Strip has also been relatively quiet, with the suspension of the return marches and Hamas' focusing on fighting the virus. However, the PA's fight against the virus has been accompanied by a smear campaign against Israel. In the Gaza Strip fighting the virus has been accompanied by a Hamas blame campaign and threats.

The fight against the spread of COVID-19 in the Palestinian refugee camps in Lebanon

On February 1, 2020, the first case of COVID-19 infection was detected in Lebanon. On March 10, 2020, the first COVID-19 patient died. So far (updated to April 10, 2020), a total of 582 people have been infected in Lebanon, 29 of them severely. A total of 19 people have died of COVID-19 and 67 recovered. There were no reports of patients among the Palestinians living in the refugee camps. However, it should be taken into account that there may be such cases which were not detected.
