Palestinian Terrorism, 2021: Summary, Types and Trends

Despite Operation Guardian of the Walls in May 2021, since 2017 there has been no consistent change in the level of Palestinian popular terrorism in Judea, Samaria and Jerusalem. During 2021 Palestinian terrorists carried out 54 significant terrorist attacks, compared with 40 in 2020, 34 in 2019 and 55 in 2015. Three Israelis (civilians) were killed, similar to 2020, and 34 Israelis were wounded; 46 in 2020. Twenty terrorist attacks were carried out in Greater Jerusalem and one in Jaffa. In 2021 the number of stabbing attacks rose and there were 30 (about 56% of the total), compared with 19 in 2020 (48% of the total). There were 12 shooting attacks (22% of the total), eight vehicular ramming attacks (about 15% of the total), three combined attacks and one incursion into an Israeli community. In addition, there were about 1,700 rock-throwing incidents and 350 involving Molotov cocktails.

News of Terrorism and the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict (January 19-25, 2022)

This past week there was an increase in incidents involving Palestinians throwing rocks and Molotov cocktails at Israeli vehicles, IDF posts and the fences of Israeli communities in Judea and Samaria. While in the Gaza Strip, Mohammed al-Emadi, chairman of Qatar's National Committee for the Reconstruction of Gaza, signed an agreement companies manufacturing and distributing electricity in the Gaza Strip. In the Gaza Strip the Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) organized a demonstration in support of the Houthis in Yemen. Hussein al-Sheikh, chairman of the Palestinian Authority (PA) commission of civilian affairs, met with Israeli Foreign Minister Yair Lapid. In Judea, Samaria and the Gaza Strip there was a significant rise in the number of active coronavirus cases, especially of the omicron variant.

News of Terrorism and the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict (January 4-11, 2022)

According to an initial report, on the evening of January 11, 2022, a Palestinian carried out a vehicular ramming attack near the community of Halamish, north of Ramallah. An IDF soldier was. wounded.Shots were fired at Israeli security forces operating in the Balata refugee camp. The agreement which ended terrorist prisoner's Hashem Abu Hawwash hunger strike was perceived by the Palestinians as a "victory" which could potentially be exploited to secure the release of other prisoners. The Palestinian terrorist organizations operating in the Gaza Strip continue their threats of escalating violence if Israel does not meet their demands for rebuilding the Gaza Strip and lifting the so-called "siege." Mahmoud Abbas went to Sharm el-Sheikh at the invitation of the Egyptian president. A Fatah delegation headed by Jibril al-Rajoub is visiting Syria.

This past week tensions mounted in the Gaza Strip. On January 1, 2022, two rockets were fired at Israel. They landed in the Mediterranean off the Tel Aviv coast. No claim of responsibility was issued. The joint operations room of the terrorist organizations in the Gaza Strip reported the rocket fire was caused by the weather. On December 31, 2021, a terrorist attack was prevented at the Gitai Avishar Junction near Ariel, southwest of Nablus. Tensions were significantly increased by the deterioration of the heath and the hospitalization of Hashem Abu Hawwash, a Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) terrorist administrative detainee who has been on a hunger strike for 140 days, demanding to be released.

The military exercise held by the joint operations room of the terrorist organizations in the Gaza Strip: messages and threats for Israel

On December 26, 2021, the joint operations room of the terrorist organizations in the Gaza Strip, headed by Hamas, announced they would hold three days of military exercises called Firm Pillar 2, having held Firm Pillar 1 at the end of 2020 ("firm pillar" is a phrase taken from the Qur’an to send a message of unity). All the military terrorist wings of the terrorist organizations participated. The final exercise was held at the al-Qassam Shuhadaa (martyrs') Hamas post in Rafah on December 29, 2022, attended by prominent representatives of the military terrorist wings, among them Ayman Nofal from Hamas' Izz al-Din Qassam Brigades, Khaled Mansour from the Palestinian Islamic Jihad's Jerusalem Brigades, and Abu Mujahed from the Popular Resistance Committees' military terrorist wing (al-Jazeera TV, December 30, 2021). On December 14, 2021, before the joint exercises, Hamas' military terrorist wing held its own exercise called Defender of Jerusalem.
