Another Round of Escalation Following Hamas Rocket Fire at Central Israel

On March 25-26, 2019, there was another round of escalation, the seventh since the "return marches" began on March 30, 2018. It began after a rocket fired by Hamas (which claimed it was fired "by mistake") hit a house in a community north of Tel Aviv (seven people injured). The IDF responded by attacking dozens of targets in the northern and central Gaza Strip, including significant targets. The Battle for Hearts and Minds Media instructions posted to a Hamas forum during the most recent round of escalation

Instructions were posted to a Hamas forum regarding the terminology that should be used in the media. According to the instructions, media workers should avoid the use of terminology that indicates a recognition of the existence of Israel (the "Zionist entity"); care should taken to designate all sites attacked by Israel as "civilian targets" and not as military targets; the cities in Israel which are attacked should be referred to as occupied Palestinian territories, and not as cities; and there is no such thing as "the residents of Israel's south" because [the Israelis] are thieves who took the Palestinian lands by force. News of Terrorism and the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict (March 13– March 19, 2019)

Events this past week focused on the combined stabbing and shooting attack at two locations near Ariel in Samaria. On March 15, 2019, two Iranian-made Fajr M-75 rockets were launched from the Gaza Strip at the Tel Aviv region in central Israel. During the past few days Hamas raised the level of violence in the Gaza Strip, after more than a week of relative quiet. Read more...

This past week the Palestinians continued to demonstrate a high level of violence at the "return march" and the days afterwards. In the meantime, Egypt continued its efforts to bring calm and to formulate an arrangement acceptable to Israel and Hamas. Hamas and the other organizations are planning a variety of activities for Saturday, March 30, 2019 (the first anniversary of the "return marches"). Popular terrorism continues in Judea and Samaria. The Palestinian media reported that Mahmoud Abbas appointed Dr. Muhammad Ashtiya, a member of Fatah's Central Committee, as the new Palestinian prime minister. Read more...

This past week the Palestinians continued to demonstrate a high level of violence at the "return march" and the days afterwards. The violence during and between the marches, which has continued for several weeks, is the result of Hamas' strategy of controlled violence to exert pressure on Israel to agree to an arrangement on Hamas' terms. This past week terrorist events in Judea and Samaria focused on the vehicular attack targeting IDF soldiers in Kafr Ni'ma An IDF officer was critically wounded and an Border Policeman was slightly injured. This past week during the Friday "return march" and the following days there again was a high level of violence. An Iranian Arabic TV channel broadcast a program about the military capabilities of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ), Iran's preferred terrorist organization.
