ISIS operatives have been repelled to the area of Al-Safa, their main stronghold, and are now surrounded and cut off from supplies. This week, the Syrian army continued to reinforce its troops in key areas around Idlib.

Spotlight on Global Jihad (August 2-8, 2018)

On August 2, 2018, the Syrian army and its allies completed the campaign to take over southern Syria. In order to ease the pressure on the Yarmouk Basin, the ISIS enclave northeast of As-Suwayda initiated a deadly showcase attack against the Druze population in the city of As-Suwayda and its rural area (July 25, 2018). This is apparently the background for Syria’s decision to take over the ISIS enclave northeast of As-Suwayda, even at the expense of a certain delay in the campaign to take over the Idlib area (for which preparations continue).

Spotlight on Global Jihad (July 26 – August 1, 2018)

On July 31, 2018, the Syrian army almost completed its takeover of the Yarmouk Basin from ISIS. At the same time, the Syrian Army completed its takeover of the area of Quneitra. Syrian soldiers entered the old city of Quneitra and raised the Syrian flag (a “victory picture”). In order to ease the pressure exerted on it in the Yarmouk Basin, ISIS carried out a combined attack against the Druze civilian population in the city of As-Suwayda and several villages in its vicinity.

Increasing Iranian control of the Albukamal border crossing area – part of Iran’s strategy of establishing an overland supply route connecting Iran with Iraq, Syria and Lebanon (in collaboration with ImageSat International – ISI)

In recent months, Iran has increased its control in the area of the Albukamal border crossing between Syria and Iraq by Shiite forces affiliated with it. Iran attaches major strategic importance to this crossing since the overland supply route leading to Iraq, Syria and Lebanon passes through it (the “Land Corridor”). It seems that during recent months, vehicle traffic through the Albukamal area has begun, but it is not yet at full capacity.

Spotlight on Global Jihad (July 12-18, 2018)

The Syrian army continues to record achievements in the campaign to take over the south of the country. This week, the Syrian army mounted an offensive against the rebel strongholds east and southeast of Quneitra. In addition to the fighting, diplomatic talks were held, including the issue of the presence of the Iranians and the Shiite forces handled by them (the Netanyahu-Putin meeting, the Trump-Putin meeting).
