Operation Iron Swords (Updated to 1 p.m., February 15, 2024)

During the past day, IDF forces intensified their activities in Khan Yunis. On the morning of February 15, 2024, Palestinian media reported IDF activities in Nasser Hospital. Meanwhile, the forces in the northern and central Gaza Strip operated to eliminate armed terrorist squads remaining in the area and also carried out targeted attacks. The ground forces coordinated attacks with the Israeli Air Force and Navy.According to reports, discussions (hostage deal) continue in Cairo, although at a lower level. They also revealed that "external" Hamas members had not yet received a response from Yahya al-Sinwar regarding the controversial issues. According to reports, Rafah is overcrowded because of the displaced persons arriving in the area. Meanwhile, many residents, fearing an Israeli attack, were reported to have left the city. Hezbollah claimed responsibility for one attack. For the first time since the ceasefire, Hezbollah did not claim responsibility for attacks against Israel, including the barrage of rockets at Safed which killed one soldier and injured eight others. The Israeli Air Force carried out massive attacks on Hezbollah targets, including Radwan force targets. Hezbollah stated that the attacks, in which civilians were also killed, would not go unanswered. IDF forces continued counterterrorism activities in Judea and Samaria , rendering six lathes for the production of weapons unusable, confiscating equipment from two print shops, confiscating weapons and detaining wanted Palestinians. The chairman of the Palestinian Authority (PA), said the PA, with all its institutions, was ready to begin work and perform its duty as a Palestinian national authority in the Gaza Strip, Judea and Samaria The UN Security Council held another session to discuss the Houthis' attacks on ships in the Red Sea. The families of the Israeli hostages filed a formal complaint against Hamas at the International Criminal Court in The Hague.a

Islamic Resistance in Iraq attacks on American and Israeli targets since the beginning of Operation Iron Swords

On October 17, 2023, ten days after the start of Operation Iron Swords in the Gaza Strip, an organization called the Islamic Resistance in Iraq (IRI) began publishing claims of responsibility for attacking United States military bases in Iraq and Syria. The announcement of a temporary ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, which began on November 24, 2023 to free the hostages and deliver humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip, led to a dramatic decrease in the organization's activity. The IRI is actually an umbrella organization uniting several pro-Iranian Shi'ite militias in Iraq, operating under the direction of the Quds Force of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC). The generic name "Islamic Resistance in Iraq," without the names of commanders or operatives and without publishing a logo, is used to blur the organization's identity and its direct connection to Iran. The IRI's use of the Saberin News Telegram channel, which is used by the pro-Iranian militias in Iraq, and the Telegram channel of its military information unit, to issue claims of responsibility, as well as the nature of its operational activity, indicates the close connection between the militias.

Sheikh Yusuf al-Qaradawi and his impact on the dissemination of radical Islam

Sheikh Yusuf al-Qaradawi, considered for many years one of the senior scholars in Sunni Islam, died on September 26, 2022, at 96. Qaradawi, born in Egypt, arrived in the early 1960s from Egypt to Qatar, which became the center of his activity. Among other things, he established a network of global Islamic organizations. Until 2018, he headed the radical Islamic organization World Association of Muslim Scholars. Through this organization, he concentrated and coordinated the activity of radical Islamic scholars around the world, many of them members of the Muslim Brotherhood, but there were also members of other streams, shaping together the current radical Islamic discourse. Qaradawi was mainly known as a key figure in shaping the concept of violent jihad and the one who allowed carrying out terror attacks, including suicide bombing attacks, against Israeli citizens, the US forces in Iraq, and some of the Arab regimes. Notwithstanding his contribution to the development of jihad movements, Qaradawi opposed Al-Qaeda and ISIS.

News of Terrorism and the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict (January 12-18, 2021)

On January 17, 2022, a Palestinian tried to stab an IDF fighter near the Gush Etzion Junction. The fighter shot and killed him. The Palestinians accused Israel of the deaths of two Palestinians, aged 75 and about 80, who apparently died as the result of IDF actions, and are trying to raise international protests. Mahmoud Abbas met with the mother of terrorist prisoner Nasser Abu Hamid, whose health has deteriorated, and the PA continues its efforts to secure his release, accusing Israel of medical negligence of prisoners. A Palestinian family in the east Jerusalem neighborhood of Sheikh Jarrah barricaded itself in its house when Israeli police forces came to evict them after the municipality had issued an eviction notice. Isma'il Haniyeh, head of Hamas' political bureau, met with Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian at the Iranian embassy in Doha, Qatar.

News of Terrorism and the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict (December 22-28, 2021)

Terrorist attacks: This past week a vehicular ramming attack in northern Samaria and two shooting attacks, one near al-Bireh and the other near Nablus, targeted Israeli security forces. No casualties were reported. However, relative calm continues in the Gaza Strip, accompanied by threats from Hamas and the other terrorist organizations to gradually escalate the "struggle" against Israel because of Israel's [alleged] delaying tactics in easing the daily lives of the Gazans and in rebuilding the Gaza Strip. The PA, Hamas and the PIJ strongly condemned the remarks made by Knesset Member Mahmoud Abbas, who stated that Israel was a Jewish state and would remain as one. The coronavirus: There was a slight decrease in the number of active cases in Judea, Samaria and the Gaza Strip. In Judea and Samaria 35 Palestinians were found to have contracted the omicron variant; the first case of the variant was detected in the Gaza Strip.
