Spotlight on Iran (July 20-31, 2023)

Iran condemned the IDF operation in Nablus, in which three armed Palestinians were killed. Additionally, the Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman condemned Israel’s National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir’s visit to the Temple Mount. Reuters reported on a recent meeting between senior officials from the IRGC’s Qods Force and Hamas, during which they discussed the internal crisis in Israel. Newsweek published an investigative report on the Imam Hossein Division, the pro-Iranian militia considered the strongest in Syria and linked to the IRGC’s Qods Force. Iran condemned the attack carried out by ISIS on July 27, 2023, in the Shiite quarter on the outskirts of Damascus, in which six people were killed. There were no casualties among Iranian pilgrims.

Spotlight on Iran (July 6-20, 2023)

After the most recent IDF activity in Jenin, Iran praised the Palestinian "resistance" to Israel. A spokesman for the Iran foreign ministry called it "a new historic defeat" for Israel and the Iranian Tasnim News Agency, affiliated with the Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC), claimed the results proved the strategic success of arming the West Bank. The Iranian media reported the death of an IRGC officer . According to the reports, he died of wounds received in an undated attack in Syria attributed to Israel. A Syrian opposition channel reported that in recent months the IRGC commander in eastern Syria had been working to implement directives received from senior Iranian officials instructing the pro-Iranian militias to gain full control of the Deir ez-Zor district in eastern Syria. The chief of staff of the Iranian armed forces warned the Iraqi government that unless it met the deadline it had promised for disarming the armed groups in the north of the country, Iran would renew its military activities against them.

Spotlight on Iran (June 22 – July 6, 2023)

Isma'il Haniyeh, head of Hamas' political bureau, and Ziyad al-Nakhalah, PIJ secretary general, both of whom visited Iran at the end of June 2023, were interviewed by the Iranian media and discussed Iran's support for the Palestinians. At the end of June, the Syrian prime minister met with a delegation headed by the Iranian ambassador to Damascus to discuss bilateral cooperation in various fields. The Israeli, Cypriote and American intelligence agencies prevented an Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) terrorist attack against Israelis in Cyprus. The Israeli security forces exposed and dismantled a Hezbollah-Iran terrorist network which used digital currency for money laundering on behalf of the IRGC. A delegation of the Iraqi Shi'ite "coordinating framework" visited Tehran and met with senior Iranian officials. They discussed ways to form a coalition of the pro-Iranian Shi'ite militias in preparation for the upcoming municipal elections in Iraq.

Spotlight on Iran (June 8-22, 2022)

In mid-June 2023, a Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) delegation visited Iran and met with senior Iranian officials, including supreme leader Khamenei. A delegation of senior Hamas figures also arrived in Tehran for a visit. The Iranian and Syrian foreign ministers held a phone conversation to discuss the outcomes of the Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi's visit to Damascus in May, as well as regional developments, including the improvement in Syria's foreign relations with the Arab states. An Iraqi news website reported that the commander of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps' Qods Force visited Baghdad and met with leaders of the Shi'ite "coordination framework" to discuss recent political and security developments in Iraq.The head of Iran's Strategic Foreign Relations Council visited Baghdad and met with senior members of the Iraqi government to discuss the expansion of bilateral relations.

Spotlight on Iran (May 23 – June 8, 2023)

A senior official in the Iranian ministry of defense said that in view of Israel's increased threats to Syria, Iran was interested in upgrading Syria's aerial defense systems. The Washington Post reported that Iran and its allies were planning attacks on American armored vehicles in Syria. A Syrian news website reported the completion of an IRGC training course for Syrian fighters in the pro-Iranian militias in eastern Syria. At the end of May Iraq's national security advisor arrived in Tehran for a visit, where he met with the secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council. They discussed implementing the agreement for security along the Iraq-Iran border; the issue of border security was also discussed by the interior ministers of both countries.

The Syrian minister of oil and mineral resources arrived in Tehran for a visit and met with his Iranian counterpart to discuss implementing the agreement for energy cooperation A Syrian news channel reported an uptick in measures to secure the transfer of weapons from Iran to Syria. It also reported the arrival of IRGC military instructors to provide training for pro-Iranian militia fighters in eastern Syria. In the wake of Operation Shield and Arrow in the Gaza Strip, the Iranian foreign minister spoke with the head of Hamas' political bureau and the secretary-general PIJ, Esmail Ghaani, commander of the IRGC's Qods Force, sent a communiqué to the Palestinians and the Palestinian organizations, praising them for their "victory" in the most recent round of fighting in Gaza Referring to the Flag March held on Israel's Jerusalem Day, Iran condemned the "repeated desecration of al-Aqsa mosque."
