Against the backdrop of ongoing Iranian efforts to deepen economic cooperation and increase its involvement in Syria’s reconstruction, the deputy chairman of the Syrian-Iranian Chamber of Commerce complained that Russia and Turkey are obtaining economic benefits in Syria at Iran’s expense. A Syrian news website published a report containing new details concerning the Imam Ali base used by the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) and pro-Iranian militias in the Albu Kamal region near the Syria-Iraq border. During a visit of a delegation from the Iraqi Ministry of Electricity to Tehran, the Iranian minister of oil declared that Iran is ready to discuss new proposals put forth by Iraq to extend the contract regarding the export of Iranian gas to Iraq.

Spotlight on Iran (September 2, 2021 – September 14, 2021)

Iran stressed once again its willingness to expand the assistance to Lebanon due to the severe economic crisis experienced by the country. The Iranian minister of foreign affairs said in a phone call with his Lebanese colleague that Iran is willing to supply fuel to the Lebanese government (and not merely Hezbollah), and the Iranian ambassador to Lebanon declared that his government offered to assist Lebanon in establishing electric power stations. Meanwhile, Hezbollah leader Nasrallah made it clear (September 13, 2021) that, contrary to the original plan, the Iranian tankers would not run out of fuel in Lebanon but in Syria, from where it would be transferred to Lebanon. This is to prevent Lebanon from being exposed to sanctions.

Spotlight on Iran (August 19, 2021 – September 2, 2021)

Hossein Amir-Abdollahian has assumed his new position as Iran’s minister of foreign affairs. In the first days of his tenure, he paid visits to Syria and Iraq. The Syrian news website, Euphrates Post, reported that in recent days, the IRGC transferred a large number of rockets to pro-Iranian militias operating in Deir Ezzor, eastern Syria. The spokesman of the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed the claim made by the Secretary General of Hezbollah, Hassan Nasrallah, concerning the transfer of fuel shipments from Iran to Lebanon. Iranian activities in the economic sphere in Syria and Iraq: The chairman of the Joint Iranian-Syrian Chamber of Commerce announced that Iran intends to participate in a trade fair that will be held in the coming months in Damascus, during which Iranian products will be put on display.

Spotlight on Iran (August 5, 2021 – August 19, 2021)

Senior “resistance axis” leaders used their presence in the inauguration ceremony of the Iranian President , Ebrahim Raisi, held in Tehran on August 5, to hold a series of meetings with senior Iranian regime officials. The Secretary General of Hezbollah, Hassan Nasrallah, stated again that his organization intends to import fuel from Iran to Lebanon in light of the severe fuel shortages in Lebanon. On August 10, the Iraqi Minister of Foreign Affairs, Fuad Hussein, arrived for a visit in Iran. During the meeting, he presented an invitation to President Raisi to take part in a conference of several regional leaders. The summit is organized by Iraq and is set to take place in Baghdad at the end of August.

Spotlight on Iran (July 22, 2021 – August 5, 2021)

An Iranian commander in the Afghan militia, the Fatemiyoun Brigade, which operates under the direction of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC), died in Syria. The Speaker of the Majlis, Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf, arrived for an official three-day visit in Syria. A pro-Hezbollah Lebanese newspaper reported that the Secretary General of the organization, Hassan Nasrallah, stated in a meeting with members of the group that Hezbollah intends to soon import fuel and medicine from Iran to Lebanon.

Spotlight on Iran (July 8-22, 2021)

On July 9, an Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) fighter was killed in Syria, likely in a mine explosion. The Commander of the IRGC’s Qods Force, Esmail Qa’ani, recently visited Syria, during which he stopped over at the headquarters of the Fatemiyoun Brigade, an Afghan militia operating under IRGC control in Syria. In late July, an Iranian trade delegation is set to visit Syria to further cooperation between the cement industries of the two countries. The Iranian President-Elect, Ebrahim Raisi, spoke on the phone with the head of Hamas’ Politburo and the secretary general of Palestinian Islamic Jihad.
