Tehran continues to deny Israeli reports about Iranian involvement in the clashes last weekend in Syria. Meanwhile, senior Iranian officials continue to emphasize that Iran sees the continuation of its involvement in Syria as a vital national interest and that its presence in the country is based on a formal request of the Damascus government. In the Iraqi arena, Iran continues to try and promote its economic role as part of Iraq’s forthcoming reconstruction.

Iranian Responses to Growing Tensions with Israel and an Initial Assessment of Their Implications from an Iranian Standpoint

The initial public statement from Iran with regards to these extraordinary security developments in Israel’s northern front reflect an Iranian effort to play down its role in the events; display a united front between Iran, Syria and Hezbollah vis-à-vis Israel; present the downing of the Israeli jet as a success of the “Resistance Front” and as a change of the rules of the game regarding the continuation of Israeli violations of Syrian sovereignty. Spotlight on Global Jihad (February 1-7, 2018)

The Syrian forces continued their campaign to take over the Idlib Province, the most significant stronghold of the rebel organizations headed by the Headquarters for the Liberation of Al-Sham. A Russian Sukhoi 25 plane was shot down in the area of Idlib. In the area between Albukamal and Deir ez-Zor, east of the Euphrates River, ISIS is conducting intensive guerrilla activity against the SDF forces.

The statement made by the Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, following his meeting with the Russian President Putin about Iran’s activities in Syria and Lebanon gained widespread coverage in Iranian media.

Spotlight on Iran (January 7- January 21, 2018)

The intention of the United States to establish a military force, comprised of its allies the Syrian Democratic Forces. The fissures between Iran, Turkey and Russia over the settlement of the war in Syria are increasingly apparent. Iran is showing greater interest in Iraq, as the Iraqi political arena shifts gears ahead of the upcoming general elections, set to be held in May 2018.

News of Terrorism and the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict (January 3 – 9, 2018)

This past week there was an increase in the trend towards fewer participants in demonstrations and riots in Judea, Samaria and east Jerusalem. A rocket and several mortar shells were fired at Israel. Israeli Air Force aircraft attacked "a key terrorist facility" in the Gaza Strip. The Israel Security Agency revealed that an indictment was recently handed down for a Palestinian student from Hebron who was recruited by Iranian intelligence during a visit to a relative in South Africa.
