News of Terrorism and the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict (June 22-28, 2022)

This past week the Israeli security forces continued counterterrorism activity in Judea and Samaria.  The Gaza Strip was relatively quiet. . A Hamas delegation led by Isma'il Haniyeh visited Lebanon and met with Lebanese government officials, Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah and representatives of the Palestinian organizations. The Palestinian Authority (PA) is preparing for the visit of American President Joe Biden. Another wave of the coronavirus has begun, with a rise in the number of cases in Judea, Samaria and the Gaza Strip.

The military-terrorist wing of Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) held military exercise in the Gaza Strip to convey threats to Israel.

On June 20, 2022, the Jerusalem Brigades, the military-terrorist wing of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) held a large exercise in the Gaza Strip. According to PIJ sources, the exercise mainly focused on firing rockets and artillery at targets at sea. Apparently the military-terrorist wings of the organizations in the Gaza Strip are keeping a low profile and maintaining relative quiet to prevent another round of combat with Israel at this time. The exercises, with their displays of force and military capabilities, are another way of threatening Israel and part of the so-called "balance of deterrence," including threats from Ibrahim al-Madhoun to attack Israel's offshore oil rig (see below).

News of Terrorism and the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict (June 15-21, 2022)

This past week the Israeli security forces continued counterterrorism activities in Judea and Samaria. During an IDF activity in Jenin three Palestinians who shot at the forces were killed. On June 18, 2022, after two months of relative quiet, a rocket was fired from the northern Gaza Strip at the southern coastal city of Ashqelon. In response Israeli aircraft attacked several Hamas military-terrorist sites, including a new Hamas surveillance post in the northern Gaza Strip near the Israeli community of Netiv HaAsara. The military-terrorist wing of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) held a broad exercise in the Gaza Strip which included rocket fire.

Hamas revealed information about two operatives killed in Operation Guardian of the Walls, both senior figures in its military-terrorist wing UAV project.

Led by Hamas, the Palestinian organizations in the Gaza Strip marked the anniversary of Operation Guardian of the Walls. For the occasion, on June 11, 2022, the Izz al-Din Qassam Brigades, Hamas' military-terrorist wing, issued a 28-minute two senior operatives in Hamas' UAV-production unit and were killed in an IDF airstrike on May 12, 2021, t.During and after Operation Guardian of the Walls Hamas and its affiliated media outlets tried to play down the IDF's successes, focusing on the barrages of rockets fired at Israel, alleging they caused casualties and disrupted daily life in Israel. They also claimed, falsely, that most of the Gazans killed by the Israeli Air Force's attacks were civilians, and only a few were military operatives In some instances, when senior military operatives were killed, a great deal of information about their rank and activities was hidden.

Spotlight on Terrorism and the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict (June 8-14, 2022)

This past week the Israeli security forces continued operating in Judea and Samaria to detain Palestinians suspected of involvement in terrorist activities. During an Israeli security force activity in Halhul, a Palestinian who attacked the soldiers was killed. On June 11, 2022, a Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) operative from Ya'bad died. A conference was held in al-Bireh regarding the historical status quo of al-Aqsa mosque and other Islamic sites in Jerusalem. The commission appointed by the UN Human Rights Council after Operation Guardian of the Walls issued its first report. Most of the claims were unilaterally directed against Israel. . The Palestinian Authority (PA) foreign ministry and Hamas welcomed the findings.

Hamas “explains” not firing rockets during the Flag March

on May 29, 2022, Israel held its traditional Flag March, marking the unification of Jerusalem after the Six Day War. Hamas and the other terrorist organizations threatened they would attack, including from the Gaza Strip. In reality, the march was held without particular incident, despite the threats and warnings, and there was no response from the Gaza Strip. The Palestinian public was disappointed, and many criticized Hamas for not carrying out its threats. In the meantime Hamas claimed a propaganda-security victory, claiming its threats had exhausted Israel politically, militarily and security. As time passed and criticism continued, Hamas became increasingly apologetic.
