This past week terrorism events focused on the new round of escalation in southern Israel, during which 105 rockets and an estimated 12 mortar shells hit Israeli territory. Hamas and the Popular Resistance Committees (PRC) claimed responsibility for most of the rocket launchings.

An IED placed near the security fence (which critically wounded an IDF officer) and an estimated 70 rockets and mortar shells which hit Israeli population centers in the south marked a new round of escalation in southern Israel.

Hamas and other organizations strongly object to the inclusion of Holocaust studies in the UNRWA school curriculums.

On October 17 the Department of Refugee Affairs of the de-facto Hamas administration said in an announcement that it strongly opposed UNRWA’s decision once again to introduce Holocaust studies into the curriculum of the schools it operates in the Palestinian refugee camps.

This past week rocket fire from the Gaza Strip into Israeli territory continued. Seven rocket hits were identified. The Palestinian Authority continues its political activities to promote a vote in the UN General Assembly for non-member status of a Palestinian state.

This past week three rockets landed in Israeli territory. There were no casualties and no damage was done. Mahmoud Abbas, chairman of the Palestinian Authority, delivered a militant speech to the UN General Assembly which included strong accusations against Israel and its policies.

The focus of this past week’s events was an incident on the Israeli-Egyptian border in which an IDF soldier was killed. An Israeli Air Force strike prevented a terrorist attack from the Gaza Strip via the Sinai Peninsula.
