After Hamas took over the Gaza Strip, Abu Mazen dissolved the Palestinian national unity government and established an emergency Fatah-affiliated government. Hamas rejected the move, creating a situation of two Palestinian governments, one in the West Bank and one in the Gaza Strip, both struggling for internal and international legitimacy.
