The Egyptian initiative for a lull in the fighting in the Gaza Strip has gone into high gear. An agreement on principle was reached between Egypt and Hamas regarding a six-month lull, “Gaza first,” during which Egypt would work to extend it to the West Bank.

On Passover Eve IDF forces prevented a combined mass-casualty attack at the Kerem Shalom Crossing. The attack was carried out by Hamas as part of its campaign against the crossings, to the detriment of the residents of the Gaza Strip.

Three IDF soldiers killed by Hamas gunfire in renewed escalation in the Gaza Strip

On the morning of April 16 an IDF force operating along the border fence near Kibbutz Be’eri (4 km, or about 2 ½ miles, southwest of the Karni Crossing) observed two armed Palestinians attempting to place IEDs near the security fence.

The Egypt-Hamas media mud-slinging intensifies: Egyptian establishment daily Al-Ahram accuses Hamas of coordinating with the Muslim Brotherhood to use force to breach the Palestinian-Egyptian border, killing Egyptian soldiers

The Hamas government has recently conducted an extensive media campaign regarding the lack of fuel in the Gaza Strip and the worsening of humanitarian conditions. It has also threatened Israel and Egypt, warning that the Gaza Strip was ready to “erupt” and would do so if the blockade were not lifted.

Hamas’s military buildup in the Gaza Strip (Updated April 2008)
