Spotlight on Iran (October 15-29, 2017)

At the center of events of the past two weeks was the visit to Syria of the Chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces, Mohammad Bagheri. Alongside its military effort, Iran is acting to increase its reliagious influence in Syria. The visit of the Commander of the Qods Force of the IRGC, Qasem Soleimani, to the Kurdish region in northern Iraq was at the center of events in Iraq.

News of Terrorism and the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict (October 18 –24, 2017)

This past week was relatively quiet. A vehicular attack was apparently prevented in central of Israel and a stabbing attack was prevented at the Gush Etzion Junction. The Gaza Strip remained quiet. Implementing the Hamas-Fatah reconciliation continued, although senior Hamas figures asserted their refusal to discuss the future of the military-terrorist wing and its weapons. A Hamas delegation headed by Saleh al-'Arouri, deputy head of Hamas' political bureau, visited Iran.

One of the members of a recent Hamas delegation to Russia was Muhammad Sawalha, a London-based Hamas operative engaged in extensive anti-Israel activities.

Muhammad Kazem Sawalha is a senior Hamas operative based in London who has held military and political positions in Hamas. At the end of the nineteen eighties he was a senior operative in Hamas military-terrorist infrastructure in Judea and Samaria.

News of Terrorism and the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict (October 3 – 17, 2017)

At the beginning of October there was a stabbing attack that killed an Israeli civilian from Elkana. This past week two rockets were fired. On October 12, 2017, a reconciliation agreement was signed by Fatah and Hamas with the stated goal of "ending the Palestinian division."

Popular Terrorism: The Current Situation

On October 26, 2017, about two years after the outbreak of the wave of popular terrorism (early October, 2015), there was a shooting attack in the community of Har Adar (northwest of Jerusalem). It was a terrorist attack carried out as part of the strategy the Palestinians call "popular resistance."
