News of Terrorism and the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict (February 16-22, 2022)

This past week tensions remained high in Judea and Samaria, with Hamas and other terrorist organizations fanning the flames. In Sheikh Jarrah in east Jerusalem rioting continued, although not as intensely as previously. Zaher Jabarin, who holds the prisoners' portfolio in Hamas, regarding the issue of prisoners and MIAs, claimed Israel was procrastinating to avoid concluding the prisoner exchange deal and trying to draw it out as much as possible. Hamas denied reports in the Philippine and Israeli media about the prevention of an attack on the Israeli legation and Israelis in the Philippines. Mahmoud Abbas held a series of political meeting this past week. On February 17, 2022, the PLO's Executive Committee met in Ramallah; the meeting was chaired by Mahmoud Abbas.

News of Terrorism and the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict (February 9-15, 2022)

The killing of three al-Aqsa Martyrs' Brigades terrorist operatives in Nablus by Israeli security forces on February 8, 2022 continued at the forefront of Palestinian discourse and activity this past week. IDF forces destroyed the floor of the house of Palestinian terrorist Mahmoud Jaradat in the village of Silat al-Harithiya, near Jenin. In the wake of the current tensions there was a sharp increase in the number of rocks and Molotov cocktails thrown in Judea and Samaria. PA Prime Minister Muhammad Shtayyeh paid an official visit to Libya. The PLO Central Council's three-day conference ended.

News of Terrorism and the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict (February 2-8, 2022)

This past week in Judea and Samaria Palestinian terrorists carried out two shooting attacks targeting Israeli security forces, one near Nablus and the other near Jenin. No Israeli casualties were reported. On February 8, 2022 in Nablus, Israeli security forces killed three Palestinian terrorists who belonged to Fatah's al-Aqsa Martyrs' Brigades, were responsible for a recent series of shooting attacks targeting IDF forces and Israeli civilians, and were planning more. On February 7, 2022, security inspectors at the Kerem Shalom Crossing prevented the smuggling of more than 10,000 rifle and hand-gun bullets. At a demonstration held in the Gaza Strip in support of Syrian refugees, pictures of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah and Qassem Soleimani, late Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps Qods Force commander, were burned. In Judea, Samaria there was a slight decrease in the number of active coronavirus cases, although the hospitals are operating at almost 100% capacity. In the Gaza Strip the number of active cases continued rising.

News of Terrorism and the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict (January 26 – February 1, 2022)

On the night of January 29, 2022, shots were fired at an IDF vehicle. No casualties were reported. The Gaza Strip has been relatively quiet. On January 26, 2022, IDF forces detained two Gazans attempting to cross the barrier in the southern Gaza Strip and enter Israeli territory. Hamas and the Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) condemned Israeli President Herzog's visit to the UAE. Hamas claimed such visits encouraged Israel to continue its [alleged] "crimes." On January 31, 2022, Mahmoud Abbas spoke on the phone with Antony Blinken, the American secretary of state. The PLO's Revolutionary Council conference, planned for February 22, 2022, may not be held. The Palestinians welcomed the Amnesty report claiming Israel operated an apartheid system against the Palestinians.

Palestinian Terrorism, 2021: Summary, Types and Trends

Despite Operation Guardian of the Walls in May 2021, since 2017 there has been no consistent change in the level of Palestinian popular terrorism in Judea, Samaria and Jerusalem. During 2021 Palestinian terrorists carried out 54 significant terrorist attacks, compared with 40 in 2020, 34 in 2019 and 55 in 2015. Three Israelis (civilians) were killed, similar to 2020, and 34 Israelis were wounded; 46 in 2020. Twenty terrorist attacks were carried out in Greater Jerusalem and one in Jaffa. In 2021 the number of stabbing attacks rose and there were 30 (about 56% of the total), compared with 19 in 2020 (48% of the total). There were 12 shooting attacks (22% of the total), eight vehicular ramming attacks (about 15% of the total), three combined attacks and one incursion into an Israeli community. In addition, there were about 1,700 rock-throwing incidents and 350 involving Molotov cocktails.

News of Terrorism and the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict (January 19-25, 2022)

This past week there was an increase in incidents involving Palestinians throwing rocks and Molotov cocktails at Israeli vehicles, IDF posts and the fences of Israeli communities in Judea and Samaria. While in the Gaza Strip, Mohammed al-Emadi, chairman of Qatar's National Committee for the Reconstruction of Gaza, signed an agreement companies manufacturing and distributing electricity in the Gaza Strip. In the Gaza Strip the Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) organized a demonstration in support of the Houthis in Yemen. Hussein al-Sheikh, chairman of the Palestinian Authority (PA) commission of civilian affairs, met with Israeli Foreign Minister Yair Lapid. In Judea, Samaria and the Gaza Strip there was a significant rise in the number of active coronavirus cases, especially of the omicron variant.
