News of Terrorism and the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict (August 22 – 28, 2018)

The "return marches" were held at the Israeli-Gaza Strip border this past Friday with a relatively small number of participants. The level and intensity of violence were relatively low. A Fatah delegation arrived in Cairo and held a short round of talks with the Egyptians. The talks again illustrated the negative role played by the Palestinian Authority (PA), which links the arrangement with Israel with the internal Palestinian reconciliation.

News of Terrorism and the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict (August 8 – 14, 2018)

This past week events focused on the fifth round of escalation between Hamas and the IDF, during which Hamas and the other terrorist organizations in the Gaza Strip launched approximately 180 rocket and mortar shells. The fifth round of escalation and the "return march," which was held as usual on Friday, clearly illustrated Hamas' determination to continue its policy of controlled violence, implemented since March 30, 2018.

The fifth round of escalation between Israel and Hamas, August 8-9, 2018

On August 8 and 9, 2018, there was a fifth round of escalation between Hamas and the IDF. Hamas and the other terrorist organizations fired about 180 rockets and mortar shells at Israeli territory. The IDF responded with extensive attacks on Hamas' infrastructure and assets. During and between the rounds of escalation (end of May to August 9, 2018), more than 610 rockets and mortar shells were fired from the Gaza Strip at Israeli territory.

News of Terrorism and the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict (Aug 1 – 7, 2018)

The Friday, August 3, 2018 "return march" was attended by more than 8,000 Gazan demonstrators and rioters. They clashed with IDF forces and threw an IED and Molotov cocktails. In the meantime, attempts continue to reach an agreement between Israel and Hamas negotiated by Egypt and Nikolay Mladenov, the UN envoy to the Middle East. Another complication making it difficult to reach an agreement is the position taken by Fatah and the Palestinian Authority (PA).

The “Return March,” Aug 3, 2018

The slogan of the Friday, August 3, 2018, "return march" was "loyalty to the shaheeds of Jerusalem – shaheed Muhammed Tareq Yusuf" (the terrorist who carried out the stabbing attack in the community of Adam on July 26, 2018, killing an Israeli civilian). Beginning around noon, more than 8,000 Gazans gathered at the five "traditional" locations along the border fence.

News of Terrorism and the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict (July 25-31, 2018)

This past week terrorist events focused on the stabbing attack in the community of Adam (near Ramallah). In the Gaza Strip snipers again shot at an IDF force, wounding an officer. The Friday July 27 "return march" was attended by about 7,000 Gazans. Attempts continued to reach an agreement to stabilize the ceasefire and prevent the situation from deteriorating, with Nikolay Mladenov, the UN envoy to the Middle East, and Egypt both holding rounds of talks with Hamas.
