Summary of Events Along the Gaza Strip Border

As they have every Friday since March 30, 2018, on October 5 Gazans held "return marches" along the Gaza Strip-Israel border. About 20 thousand Gazans participated in riots, throwing stones and burning tires. They also threw hand grenades and IEDs at the Israeli security forces. Several rioters tried to cross the security fence into Israeli territory.

The trend toward escalation continues in the Gaza Strip, with an increase in the frequency of riots and propaganda events and in the level of their accompanying violence. The humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip continues to deteriorate. In internal Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) elections, Ziyad al-Nakhalah was chosen as the organization's new secretary general. He replaces Ramadan Shalah, who had been in a coma since April and is hospitalized in Lebanon.

Summary of Recent Escalation Along the Gaza Strip Border

Since mid-September 2018 Hamas has raised the level of its anti-Israel violence. It increased the number of riots and propaganda demonstrations along the border and their accompany violence. Events peaked during the "return marches" on Friday September 21 and 28, 2018, attended on both days by up to 20,000 Gazans.

While contacts for arrangement are bogged down, Hamas recently stepped up the level of violence against Israel. At the same time, the Palestinians initiate provocations and display “creative thinking” in developing tactics of disturbing and wearing down the IDF soldiers. The main event in Judea and Samaria was a stabbing attack at the entrance to a mall in the Gush Etzion Junction.

The "return march" and Gaza flotillas continued this past Friday. Rioters threw stones, burned tires and broke into Israeli territory in the northern Gaza Strip. Senior Hamas figure Khalil al-Haya said Hamas had accepted the demands of Egypt and the UN to decrease the launching of incendiary balloons. He said Hamas also invested great effort in dealing with those who launch the balloons.
