Palestinian Terrorism: Analysis of 2017 and Forecast for 2018

During 2017 the number of terrorist attacks continued to decline. There were 82 significant terrorist attacks, as compared with 142 in 2016 and 134 during the last three months of 2015. In 2017 there were between 4 and 7 significant terrorist attacks a month, but there were also months when the numbers rose to between 10 and 13. Despite the decline in the number of attacks, there was no decline in the number of deaths they caused.

Senior Fatah and Palestinian Authority (PA) figures pay a condolence call to the family of the terrorist who killed Rabbi Raziel Shevah in a shooting attack in Samaria; Mahmoud Abbas also offered his condolences.

On January 22, 2018, three senior Fatah figures paid a condolence call at the mourning tent erected by the family of Ahmed Isma'il Muhammad Jarar (one of the terrorists who carry out the shooting attack near Havat Gilad in Samaria that killed Rabbi Raziel Shevah).

News of Terrorism and the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict (January 17 – 23, 2018)

This past week terrorist events focused on three popular terrorism ["popular resistance"] attacks. The Fatah movement disseminated notices calling "to escalate the popular resistance" and "to turn the lives of the settlers into a living hell." Mahmoud Abbas gave two speeches this past week. The first was a speech with strong rhetoric at the al-Azhar conference The second, with softer rhetoric was given at a press conference in Brussels

A ceremony sponsored by Mahmoud Abbas was held to honor terrorists holding Israeli citizenship who were imprisoned for murdering an IDF soldier

On January 14, 2018, two events were held that clearly manifested the support the Palestinian Authority (PA) and Fatah give terrorists (from all the organizations) imprisoned in Israeli jails

News of Terrorism and the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict (January 10 – 16, 2018)

This past week terrorist events focused on the murder of an Israeli civilian at the Havat Gilad Junction in Samaria. The IDF exposed another tunnel (the fourth in the past months), 1.5 kilometers long (about .93 miles). The PLO's Central Council decided to suspend recognition of Israel, cancel security coordination with it and void the economic agreement

The anniversary of Fatah’s founding was marked at universities and colleges in Judea and Samaria by glorifying shaheeds and encouraging terrorism

On January 1, 2018, was the 53rd anniversary of the founding of the Fatah movement The pictures below document the events held at Bir Zeit University, one of the most prominent institutions of higher learning in the Palestinian Authority
