    Appendix F (3)

Description and analysis of additional publications distributed by The Society for the Qur’an and the Sunnah – Palestine as part of the Salafist da’wah series.Authored by Saudi Arabians, the publications are an example of extremist Islamic ideological “exports” imported by Hamas-linked Islamic societies, such as the Qalqiliya-based Society for the Qur’an and the Sunnah – Palestine.

Communication to religious preachers and propagandists

The booklet was published in Riyadh, capital of Saudi Arabia, by Dar al-Qasim, and is undated; it was written by Muhammad bin Salih al-‘Athimin. It was apparently reprinted in the PA-administered territories by the Society for the Qur’an and the Sunnah – Palestine (1997) and distributed by al-Noor Printing, Publicity and Distribution Company.

It is a guide book for future religious preachers and propagandists and explains their role in spreading the True Religion among practicing Moslems.

The booklet deals with religious preaching (da’wah) and its importance. However, it includes messages highlighting the importance of dying a shaheed and of the Jihad. According to a passage on Page 19, for instance, da’wah means a call to follow “the straight path,” and the explanation reads: “the path of those upon whom Allah has exerted his good influence: the prophets, the righteous, the shaheeds who die a holy death through acts of martyrdom and those who do good deeds.” The booklet also lists the advantages of the shaheeds and in the context of the Israel-Palestine conflict it is a message to follow in their footsteps and die for the sake of Allah while carrying out a suicide attack.

The author, Sheikh Muhammad bin Salih al-‘Athimin, was a senior Saudi Islamic cleric who belonged to the radical Salafist trend and died in January, 2001. He devoted his life to spreading the Salafiyyah in various ways both inside and outside Saudi Arabia, was a member of the Saudi high religious council, an imam (officiating priest) at the Riyadh mosque and very well connected to the upper echelons of the Saudi religious and political establishment. He was known as having close ties with the Chechnian fighters and even published religious edicts (fatwas) legitimizing their violent struggle against Russia. After his death a library was founded in his memory to continue the promulgation of his ideas, and a Website bearing his name is operated by a “charitable organization.”

The Moslem’s Fortress – A collection of prayers, pleas and blessings
from the Qur’an and the Sunnah

A booklet published by The Society for the Qur’an and the Sunnah – Palestine and distributed by al-Noor. Its author is Saad bin Ali bin Wahf al-Qahtani. [Known as an Islamic preacher in the Mosque of Riyadh whose books about the da’wah are printed and distributed by the Saudi Ministry for Islamic Affairs and Awqaf (Religious Endowments).]

The booklet is clearly religious in nature; however, it also relates to the value of being a shaheed. For instance, under the heading “A blessing for the wearer of a new garment,” what follows, although designated a blessing, is phrased as a command (Page 18), and reads, “Wear the new [garment], receive much praise for it, and die a shaheed.” It is a reliable hadith (Islamic tradition).

A Collection of Wonderful True Stories about the Prophet [Mohammed]

The booklet was published by The Society for the Qur’an and the Sunnah – Palestine and distributed by al-Noor. It was written by Muhammad bin Jamil Zino, an instructor at the Educational Institution for Teaching the Hadith for Charitable Purposes in Mecca. [Note: He is a well-known Saudi preacher and his books about the da’wah are distributed world-wide by charitable organizations supported by the Saudi regime.]

The booklet is a collection of moral-social-Islamic stories, through which the author aspires to influence youngsters and bring them closer to Islam. The “innocent” stories are full of messages and lessons about the importance of self-sacrifice in the struggle against unbelievers (e.g., the story “The Believing Boy, The Wizard and The King”); the negative character traits of the hypocritical Jews who are depicted as not fulfilling their obligations (e.g., the story “The Leper, The Bald Man and The Blind Man”); the importance of participating in a Jihad and the great sin committed by those who fail to do so (e.g., the story “The Shirkers Who Would Not Join The Jihad”); legitimization for using military force against the countries of the unbelievers, for taking prisoner all those they chance upon and for deciding whether or not to kill them (e.g., the story “How The Head of the al-Yamamah Community Became a Moslem”).

The second page of the booklet includes information regarding distribution which exposes one of the methods of spreading Salafist da’wah messages:
