Dear readers:
1. Following a decision made by the board of directors of the Israel Intelligence Heritage and Commemoration Center, on the first anniversary of the death of Major General Meir Amit, the Intelligence and Terrorism Information Center was renamed the Meir Amit Intelligence and Terrorism Information Center.
2. General Amit (1922-2009) had a long, distinguished record in Israeli security activity, crowned by the positions of director of Israeli military intelligence and of the Mossad. In 1985 he became the chairman of the Israel Intelligence Heritage and Commemoration Center, the national memorial site for the fallen of the Israeli intelligence community, and between 2005 until his death served as its president. Meir Amit shaped the ideology of the Israel Intelligence Heritage and Commemoration Center as a vibrant, living site housing a wide variety of activities geared especially for the younger generation. Those activities perpetuate the legacy, moral values, professionalism and experience of the Israeli intelligence community.
3. The founding of the Intelligence and Terrorism Information Center in 2001 was an expression of Meir Amit's basic ideology. In the midst of Israel's blood-soaked struggle with Palestinian suicide bombing terrorism, he realized the need for disseminating reliable information about terrorism and its sponsors to the Israeli public and various target audiences around the world, and support Israel and the international community in coping with the threat of terrorism.
4. To that end he established the ITIC as a professional center, dealing with the collection, processing and dissemination of reliable information about terrorism. He provided it with the necessary resources, helped it overcome obstacles and supported its development and expansion. Meir Amit followed its activity until his last days, even when his health was uncertain, and had great satisfaction from its impressive achievements in the struggle against terrorism and in the battle for hearts and minds.
5. The Israel Intelligence Heritage and Commemoration Center, and the Meir Amit Intelligence and Terrorism Information Center as is a part of it, will preserve his legacy and continue in his spirit.
May his memory be blessed,
Dr. Colonel (Res.) Reuven Erlich Director, Meir Amit Intelligence and Terrorism Information Center |
