The most prominent of these sites is the Wadi Barada area, northwest of Damascus.הIn Mosul, the Iraqi forces had several successes. This week, the ceasefire worked out by Russia and Turkey entered into effect in Syria. The ceasefire was intended as a preparatory stage for the talks on a political settlement which are due to be held in Astana, the capital of Kazakhstan. The Fateh al-Sham Front and ISIS are not included in the ceasefire, which is its main weakness. ISIS continues its efforts to carry out showcase terrorist attacks in response to the pressure exerted on it.

How UN Security Council Resolution 2334 Relates to Palestinian Terrorism

On December 23, 2016, the UN Security Council passed Resolution 2334, with 14 countries voting in favor. The United States abstained allowing the resolution to pass. Resolution 2334 deals mostly with the Israeli settlements in Judea, Samaria and east Jerusalem, over which there is broad international consensus. The issue of terrorism is included in the resolution but its weight is slight (as opposed to extensive dealing with the settlements, which are represented as the main obstacle to peace).

The city of Aleppo is now under full control of the Syrian forces, with the assistance of a Russian Military Police battalion which arrived in the city. This week, there were no significant changes in the fighting in Mosul’s eastern neighborhoods. The perpetrator of the vehicular attack in the Christmas Market in Berlin was discovered and shot dead in Milan, where he arrived from Germany (through France).

Two mass-casualty terrorist attacks, in Jordan and Germany, were the most prominent this week. In Germany, twelve people were killed in a vehicular attack at a Christmas market in downtown Berlin. In Jordan, ten people (civilians and security personnel) were killed. ISIS claimed responsibility for the attacks. This week, civilians and rebel organization operatives were evacuated from east Aleppo.

Spotlight on Iran* (December 4 – 18, 2016)

Iran welcomed the fall of the Syrian city of Aleppo to the forces of President Bashar Assad. The deputy commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) declared the liberation of Aleppo was the first step in the victory of "the army of Islam" against the West, and said he hoped that in the near future Mosul in Iraq, Yemen and Bahrain would also be liberated.
