Popular terrorism continues, this past week manifested by an attempted stabbing attack at the Hawwara Junction near Nablus. Stones were thrown at Israeli cars and buses in Judea and Samaria. Two Israelis were wounded. Preparations are being made for the seventh Fatah conference, scheduled to take place on November 29, 2016.

The vehicular attack carried out on the Nice promenade on Bastille Day, July 14, 2016, claimed the lives of 84 people and wounded 200. It was the most lethal vehicular attack ever carried out, no less lethal than most of the other terrorist attacks carried out in Europe during the past year. However, unlike the ISIS attacks, it was relatively simple.

This past week terrorist events focused on pipe bombs that exploded near the village of Hizma (north of Jerusalem), critically wounding an IDF officer. Nakba Day events in Judea, Samaria and the Gaza Strip were held without exceptional incident.

Spotlight on Iran* (January 17 – 31, 2016)

Mohammad-Ali Jafari, commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC), said that one of Iran's major gains from regional developments was the enlistment of more than 200,000 men as fighters in the popular militias in Syria, Iraq and Libya. He said Iran would foil the "Zionist-American plot to divide Iraq and Syria." At least five more IRGC fighters were killed in Syria. Since the beginning of the ground offensive in northern Syria more than 135 Iranian fighters have been killed.

Israel's south remains quiet. In Judea, Samaria and east Jerusalem violence and terrorism continue in the so-called "popular resistance." This past week terrorist operatives of the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine (DFLP) held training exercises which included simulations of taking over an IDF post and abducting an IDF soldier. This past week Mahmoud Abbas issued an edict establishing a high national committee to monitor PA appeals to the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague, chaired by Saeb Erekat.
