At the focus of terrorist events this past week was a vehicular attack on the promenade in Armon Hanatziv in Jerusalem, carried out with a truck. Four IDF officers were killed. The terrorist was shot and killed. The Palestinian Authority and Fatah, which support the "popular resistance," of which vehicular attacks are considered a legitimate part, avoided condemning the attack or responding to it.

This past week Palestinians attempted to carry out two terrorist attacks (a vehicular attack and a stabbing attack). Popular terrorism continued unabated in Judea and Samaria with the throwing of stones and Molotov cocktails. With the growing tension in the Gaza Strip between Hamas and the Salafi jihadist organizations, Hamas sources revealed that in recent weeks they had detained about 350 operatives.

This past week there were two major attacks of Palestinian popular terrorism: Fires raged throughout Israel and the Benjamin and Judea districts for six days, causing substantial property damage and destroying extensive wooded areas. The Palestinian Authority (PA) sent eight fire engines and 41 firemen to help put out the blazes. According to initial and partial information, only a minority of the fires were caused by arson.

The Jewish High Holidays, often a time of trouble, were relatively quiet. There was a stabbing in Har Adar (north of Jerusalem) and an attempted stabbing and the Tapuah Junction in Samaria. A Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) terrorist squad handled from the Gaza Strip was recently exposed in Israel. Its operatives planned to carry out a mass-killing attack at an event in a reception hall in Beersheba, using guns and hand grenades. They also planned to abduct and murder Israelis and then use their bodies as bargain chips to negotiate with Israel.

The most significant attack was a shooting attack from a car carried out by a Palestinian from Silwan in east Jerusalem. A policeman and a woman were killed, and five people were wounded. The terrorist was shot and killed. There were also two stabbing attacks, one at the Qalandia crossing (north Jerusalem) and the other at the Negohot junction in Mt. Hebron. On October 5, 2016, a rocket hit was identified in the southern Israeli city of Sderot, the fourth since the end of Operation Protective Edge.

Spotlight on Iran* (September 25 – October 9, 2016)

Qasem Soleimani, commander of the IRGC's Qods Force, spoke at a ceremony held to mark the first anniversary of the death of Hossein Hamedani, a senior official in the IRGC killed in Syria. He said the Iranians fighting in Syria defended not only Syria but Islam and the Islamic Republic. He added that the main reason for Iran's support of Syria was Syria's support for Iran in the Iran-Iraq War. Chief of staff of the Iranian armed forces said Iran had recently attacked targets in Iraq and Syria using long-range UAVs.
