In February 2017, the Israeli security forces arrested Muhammad Faruq Sha’aban Murtaja, a resident of the Gaza Strip, the head of TIKA’s Gaza office. TIKA is a humanitarian aid organization operating on behalf of the Turkish government throughout the world, including in Judea, Samaria and the Gaza Strip.

On March 10, 2017, Mahmoud Abbas spoke on the phone with Donald Trump, the first conversation since Trump entered the White House. Following the revelation that two senior UNRWA employees were elected to the new Hamas political bureau in the Gaza Strip, Israel appealed to the United States and other countries that contribute funds to UNRWA.

Support for violence and terrorism and calls for the destruction of Israel at the Sixth International Conference on Palestinian Intifada in Tehran

On February 21-22, 2017, the Sixth International Conference on Palestinian Intifada was held in Tehran. The conference has been held since 1991 in accordance with the “Law on the Support of the People of Palestine’s Islamic Revolution” passed in the Iranian Majles in April 1990. So far, the conference has been held five times (in 1991, 2001, 2006, 2008 and 2011).

At the focus of terrorist events this past week was a vehicular attack on the promenade in Armon Hanatziv in Jerusalem, carried out with a truck. Four IDF officers were killed. The terrorist was shot and killed. The Palestinian Authority and Fatah, which support the "popular resistance," of which vehicular attacks are considered a legitimate part, avoided condemning the attack or responding to it.

This past week Palestinians attempted to carry out two terrorist attacks (a vehicular attack and a stabbing attack). Popular terrorism continued unabated in Judea and Samaria with the throwing of stones and Molotov cocktails. With the growing tension in the Gaza Strip between Hamas and the Salafi jihadist organizations, Hamas sources revealed that in recent weeks they had detained about 350 operatives.

This past week there were two major attacks of Palestinian popular terrorism: Fires raged throughout Israel and the Benjamin and Judea districts for six days, causing substantial property damage and destroying extensive wooded areas. The Palestinian Authority (PA) sent eight fire engines and 41 firemen to help put out the blazes. According to initial and partial information, only a minority of the fires were caused by arson.
