On August 26, 2014, after fifty days of fighting, an indefinite ceasefire came into effect. Since then, calm has been maintained in the Gaza Strip. The ceasefire includes the immediate opening of the border crossings and expansion of the fishing zone. Victory rallies were held in the Gaza Strip and throughout Judea and Samaria. At the same time, efforts to rebuild the Gaza Strip began. An international conference on the subject is to take place in Cairo in October.

After the official end of the 72-hour ceasefire the Palestinian terrorist organizations resumed firing rockets and mortar shells into Israeli territory. Most of the rocket fire targeted the western Negev, but rockets also hit Beersheba and Ashqelon.

Hamas' media policy forged during Operation Protective Edge restricts local and foreign correspondents covering the fighting in their reports on military-combat activity or military-related information (especially regarding rocket fire and the use of civilians as human shields). During the operation foreign and local correspondents followed Hamas' policy guidelines, for the most part, and mainly reported on the suffering of the local population and other civilian aspects of the fighting.

At 2254 hours on the night of August 5, 2014, the ministry of the interior in the Gaza Strip issued an announcement warning the Palestinians not to divulge information about terrorist operatives ("resistance" casualties) killed during Operation Protective Edge. That was because, claimed the announcement, the "occupation" (i.e., Israel) was collecting all the information and reports (about casualties) and would use them as evidence to "justify its crimes against (Palestinian) civilians."

The ceasefire that went into effect at 0800 hours on August 5 continues. The IDF completed the destruction of 32 tunnels extending under the border into Israeli territory, withdrew its forces from the Gaza Strip and redeployed them in a defensive line along the border. Negotiations to reach an arrangement are being held in Cairo, joined by representatives of Hamas, the Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) and other terrorist organizations from the Gaza Strip.
