Qasem Soleimani, commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps' (IRGC) Qods Force, speaking at a conference of Iranian clerics in Qom held on May 23, 2016, said that without Iran's support for the Syrian regime, ISIS would today control all of Syria. Hossein-Amir Abdollahian, deputy foreign minister for Arab-African affairs, said Iran was determined to continue its "advisory" mission for the regional struggle against terrorism and regarded its support as vital for regional security and political stability.

The main events this past week were the shooting attacks in Copenhagen, carried out by the same terrorist. In Libya ISIS continues to strengthen its foothold. In a showcase massacre in the "Tripoli province" of the Islamic State in Libya, 21 Egyptian Coptic immigrant workers were abducted and beheaded on a beach. In Syria and Iraq there were no significant new developments. In Syria ISIS, under pressure from the Kurds, continues its retreat from the rural area around Kobanî; in Iraq it had local successes in the regions around Samara and in the Al-Anbar province.

President Obama has set the US the clear, but in ITIC assessment pretentious, goal of destroying ISIS with a comprehensive campaign of several years. By setting the final goal as the destruction of ISIS, he has created high expectations for his and the next administration.

This study examines the nature of the Islamic State in Iraq and Greater Syria (ISIS), an Islamic Salafist-jihadi terrorist organization founded a decade ago as a branch of Al-Qaeda in Iraq. It established itself during the fighting against the United States in the Sunni regions of western Iraq and spread to eastern and northern Syria during the Syrian civil war.

Indirect, Egyptian-sponsored negotiations for a long-term ceasefire agreement continue in Cairo. The talks have been accompanied by temporary ceasefires, the latest of which was for 24 hours, from midnight August 18 to midnight August 19, 2014. On the afternoon of August 19 Hamas unilaterally violated the ceasefire and fired three rockets targeting Beersheba and Netivot, and the ceasefire collapsed.
