In early March 2015, the Iraqi Army launched an offensive to recapture the important city of Tikrit. Battles are still raging. According to US Army sources, the attack on the city of Mosul, scheduled for the spring of 2015, has been postponed for several months. In the province of Al-Hasakah, northeastern Syria, Kurdish forces (YPG) attacked ISIS forces in the area of Qamishli.

The main events this past week were the shooting attacks in Copenhagen, carried out by the same terrorist. In Libya ISIS continues to strengthen its foothold. In a showcase massacre in the "Tripoli province" of the Islamic State in Libya, 21 Egyptian Coptic immigrant workers were abducted and beheaded on a beach. In Syria and Iraq there were no significant new developments. In Syria ISIS, under pressure from the Kurds, continues its retreat from the rural area around Kobanî; in Iraq it had local successes in the regions around Samara and in the Al-Anbar province.

On the morning of January 27, 2015, a shooting attack took place at the Corinthia Hotel in Tripoli, Libya, were diplomats, foreign and local government officials and tourists stay. The attack killed at least nine people. One of the Japanese hostages, whose photo was circulated by ISIS last week, has been executed. ISIS, which is holding another Japanese hostage, has threatened to execute the other Japanese hostage and the Jordanian pilot if a female terrorist held in Jordan is not released within 24 hours. Kurdish sources reported that the YPG militias have managed to liberate the whole city of Kobani (Ayn al-Arab).

This week was marked by a series of terrorist shooting attacks in Paris, directed against the satirical weekly Charlie Hebdo and Jewish targets. These attacks killed 17 people. In Iraq and Syria, the fighting continued in the known locations, although the intensity of the fighting decreased due to the stormy weather.

Between January 7 and 9, 2015, local jihadist operatives carried out a series of shooting attacks in Paris, including a mass shooting attack at the offices of Charlie Hebdo, which had long been in the jihadi organizations' crosshairs (12 killed, ten employees and two policemen), a shooting attack at a Jewish school that was not carried out, apparently because of a traffic accident (one policewoman killed), and a shooting attack and bargaining attempt at a kosher supermarket (four killed, all Jewish). Seventeen people were killed and more than 10 were wounded.

President Obama has set the US the clear, but in ITIC assessment pretentious, goal of destroying ISIS with a comprehensive campaign of several years. By setting the final goal as the destruction of ISIS, he has created high expectations for his and the next administration.
