The pressure on ISIS in Iraq and Syria is increasing: Following the takeover of the Tabqa Dam and the airfield to its south, SDF forces operating with American support advanced to the city of Tabqa. After several weeks of fighting, the Syrian forces took over the town of Deir Hafer. Fighting in west Mosul continues to focus on the Old City. Turkey announced the successful conclusion of Operation Euphrates Shield.

Spotlight on Global Jihad (March 16-22, 2017)

The main focus of the fighting in Syria this week was an attack on several neighborhoods in eastern Damascus by the rebel organizations. While ISIS is becoming weaker and is on the strategic defensive, Fateh al-Sham Front, the rival jihadi organization affiliated with Al-Qaeda, is becoming stronger and is participating in offensive initiatives in Damascus, Hama and Daraa. In the meantime, the pressure on ISIS is mounting: In Al-Raqqah, ISIS’s stronghold in Syria, the siege of the SDF is intensifying, with the support of the United States. In Mosul, the Iraqi security forces continue to expand their control over the western part of the city.

News of Terrorism and the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict (March 15 – 21, 2017)

In Judea and Samaria, popular terrorism continues. A Palestinian woman carried out a vehicular attack at the Gush Etzion Junction. Two rockets were fired into Israeli territory from the Gaza Strip. The Israel Security Agency revealed that in February 2017 Israeli security forces had detained Muhammad Murtaja, head of the Gaza Strip branch of the Turkish TIKA organization. His interrogation revealed that he = had been an operative in Hamas' military wing. He defrauded the Turkish government and transferred humanitarian aid funds to Hamas' military wing.

Dr. Husam Zomlot Appointed by Mahmoud Abbas as the Palestinian Envoy to the United States

On March 8, 2017, Mahmoud Abbas appointed Dr. Husam Zomlot as chief of the PLO delegation to the United States, in effect representing Mahmoud Abbas and the Palestinian Authority (PA). He will replace Maen Erekat, who has held the post since 2009. Erekat will be appointed to represent the PA in London (Rai al-Youm, October 20, 2016). Since May 2016 Husam Zomlot has been advisor for strategic affairs to Mahmoud Abbas.

Head of Hamas' Department of Refugee Affairs Warns of Cuts in American and International Support for UNRWA and Opposes Firing UNRWA Employees Who Belong to Hamas

In February 2017 elections were held for Hamas' new political bureau in the Gaza Strip, its highest leadership body in Gaza. Of the 15 members elected, two were senior UNRWA employees: Dr. Suhail al-Hindi, chairman of the UNRWA staff union in Gaza and principal of an UNRWA school; and an engineer named Muhammad al-Jamassi, head of UNRWA's engineering department for the refugee camps in the central Gaza Strip.

Popular terrorism continues in Judea and Samaria, with a stabbing attack at the Lion Gate in the Old City in east Jerusalem. On March 10, 2017, Mahmoud Abbas spoke on the phone with Donald Trump, the first conversation since Trump entered the White House. Following the revelation that two senior UNRWA employees were elected to the new Hamas political bureau in the Gaza Strip, Israel appealed to the United States and other countries that contribute funds to UNRWA.
