Offensive against the Syrian City of Manbij May Be the Beginning of a Campaign to Liberate the Area near the Syrian-Turkish Border from ISIS

On May 31, 2016, the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), a Kurdish-dominated military alliance supported by the United States, initiated a campaign to liberate the northern Syrian city of Manbij from ISIS. Manbij lies west of the Euphrates, about 35 kilometers (about 22 miles) south of the Syrian-Turkish border.

Ali-Akbar Velayati, international advisor to the supreme leader, said the political-military balance in Syria was changing in favor of the Syrian government and its allies. The Iranian foreign minister said that Qassem Soleimani, commander of the IRGC's Qods Force, was currently in Iraq acting as a military advisor. Iran condemned the shooting attack in Orlando, Florida, without mentioning it had occurred in a gay nightclub.

In Iraq, the battle over Fallujah continues, with air support from the US and coalition countries. In Libya, the encirclement of the city of Sirte, a stronghold of ISIS, is tightening.

On May 30, 2016, the Iraqi forces, led by the counterterrorism force, mounted an attack on the city of Fallujah. ISIS responded to the attack on Fallujah by increasing its terrorist activity and guerrilla warfare.
In addition to the military pressure exerted on ISIS’s strongholds in Iraq and Syria, ISIS is under heavy pressure in Libya.
