The main event of the week was a combined suicide bombing attack carried out in the area of the shrine of Al-Set Zaynab, a holy Shiite site south of Damascus. In Syria, the Syrian Army continues to establish itself east and northeast of the city of Aleppo, In Deir al-Zor and its environs, fighting continues between the Syrian Army and ISIS. In Iraq, the Iraqi Army continues its efforts to cleanse the city of Ramadi and its environs of the presence of ISIS, so far without success.

An unprecedented crisis developed in the relations between Iran and Saudi Arabia. Senior Iranian officials strongly condemned the execution of al-Nimr and threatened retribution. On January 13, 2016, the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) took control of two American navy ships in the Persian Gulf. There has been a certain decline in the number of IRGC fighters who died in Syria.

The Weakening of ISIS and Its Territorial Losses in Iraq and Syria (2015)

While 2014 was a year of conquest and expansion for ISIS, in 2015 it suffered a series of setbacks in Syria and Iraq, resulting in the loss of extensive areas under its control. Most important was the loss of Ramadi, the capital city of the Sunni Anbar Province, in Western Iraq. According to the spokesman of the Western anti-ISIS coalition, ISIS lost about 40% of the territory it had held in Iraq and 20% in Syria (Businessinsider.com).

In Syria, there were no significant changes on the ground this week. In Iraq, the security forces continue to cleanse the city of Ramadi, which they do not yet fully control. Joseph Dunford, Chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, visited Iraq this week. In the face of the pressures put on it, ISIS continues to carry out terrorist attacks. In Baghdad, ISIS claimed responsibility for an attack at a mall located in the east of the city, during which dozens of hostages were taken (and were later released by the Iraqi anti-terrorism force).
