Abdelhamid Abaaoud, ISIS Terrorist of Belgian Origin Who Orchestrated the Terrorist Attack in Paris (Updated to November 19, 2015)

Abdelhamid Abaaoud (Abu Oud) was a terrorist operative of Belgian origin who headed the network that carried out the terrorist attack in Paris. After the attack he was pursued by the French security forces. On November 18, 2015, French police raided a building in the suburb of St. Denis, north of Paris, where Abaaoud was supposed to be hiding. A squad of terrorists was in the building and engaged in a firefight with the French police, during which a female terrorist was killed.

The main events of the week were the shooting and suicide bombing attacks carried out by ISIS in Paris by eight terrorists operating at six different sites. In the meantime, ISIS suffered a few painful failures on the ground: in Iraq, the Kurdish forces liberated the area of Sinjar and cut off the main supply route between Mosul and Al-Raqqah; in Syria, the Syrian Army had a few successes to the east and south of Aleppo.

On the night of November 13, 2015, ISIS carried out a coordinated terrorist attack in six locations Paris. Three squads carried out the attack, involving eight terrorist operatives. According to Paris Prosecutor François Molins, at least 132 people were killed (of whom 103 have been identified so far). Three hundred fifty-two people were injured, 99 of them critically or mortally. The worst terrorist attack on French soil since the Second World War, it was a seminal event for the French.

September 30, 2015, marked the beginning of a new phase in the foreign involvement in the civil war in Syria, when Russian planes began launching airstrikes in northern Syria. So far, most of the Russian airstrikes, along with the launch of cruise missiles from Russian ships in the Caspian Sea, were directed against the coalition of rebel organizations led by the Al-Nusra Front (Jaysh al-Fatah) in northwestern Syria (the area of Homs, Idlib and Aleppo). According to media reports, the Syrian Army, aided by Iranian operatives and Hezbollah operatives, is preparing for a ground operation in northwestern Syria.

According to Turkish and Western media reports, the US and Turkey are planning to establish an “ISIS-free” buffer zone north of Aleppo, near the Turkish-Syrian border. ISIS has called for a general mobilization of operatives to travel to Libya and carry out jihad in order to “defend Islam” in Libya.

According to reports this week, the city Al-Hasakah in northeastern Syria has been liberated from ISIS by the Kurdish forces, with US and coalition air support. The Al-Nusra Front announced that its operatives had captured a number of operatives who had been trained in Jordan by the United States and subsequently entered Syria. There were no significant changes in the other combat zones in Iraq, Syria, Libya and Egypt.
