This week, Syrian Army forces with Russian air support continued to take over neighborhoods held by the rebel organizations in the northern part of east Aleppo. So far, they have taken more than a third of east Aleppo. There were no significant developments in the campaign for Mosul.

More than a month after the beginning of the campaign for Mosul. The Iraqi army advances slowly in the eastern neighborhoods of the city and toward the airport south of Mosul, facing fierce resistance on the part of ISIS. The Shiite militias and an Iraqi army force have taken over the airport of the city of Tal Afar, west of Mosul, and cut off the main road between Iraq and Syria. Reportedly, ISIS has switched to using alternative roads.

Donald Trump's election as the 45th president of the United States was received in Iran with great surprise. Senior Iranian officials, among them Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, reacted with care and restraint in their initial references to his victory, claiming Iran was not worried but rather prepared to cope with any possible challenge. However, they did express concern that the president-elect would make good on his campaign threats to revise the nuclear agreement.

The Iraqi army has taken over some of the eastern neighborhoods of Mosul. The Iraqi army is cleansing the rural area south of Mosul. The Shiite militias continue to advance toward Tal Afar, west of Mosul. ISIS continues its terrorist attacks on Iraqi cities, especially against Shiite targets and against the Iraqi regime. In Aleppo, the Syrian forces, with Russian air support, managed to retake most of the western neighborhoods taken over by the rebels.

ISIS continued its guerrilla warfare and terrorist activity against the attacking forces, and at the same time it carried out mass-casualty terrorist attacks in Tikrit and Samarra, north of Baghdad. On the propaganda level, ISIS stresses the false message that it has the upper hand and that its operatives are victorious in the various battle zones. On November 6, 2016, the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) declared the beginning of Operation Euphrates Wrath to take over Al-Raqqah, ISIS’s “capital” in Syria. The operation enjoys an American support. For the time being, clashes are taking place in the rural area south of the city of Ain Issa, about 50 km north of Al-Raqqah.

October 17, 2016, Iraqi Prime Minister Haidar al-Abadi announced the beginning of a military operation to take over Mosul. The city of Mosul, ISIS's main stronghold where Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi announced the establishment of the Islamic Caliphate (June 4, 2014), is of symbolic value. The operation is led by the Iraqi army and the Kurdish Peshmerga forces, with the assistance of Shiite militias (under Iranian influence) and Sunni tribesmen. The attacking forces receive air support from the United States and the coalition countries. The attack on Mosul was carried out from the south and the east, and subsequently also from the north.
