In the early morning hours of March 5, 2014, Israeli commando and naval fighters stopped a commercial vessel. It was stopped in the Red Sea near the Eritrea-Sudan naval border, about 1,500 kilometers, or about 810 nautical miles, from the Israeli coast.

Rocket fire from the Gaza Strip into Israeli territory continues. The past week four rocket hits were identified in the western Negev. In response, the IDF struck terrorist targets. Senior Hamas figures claimed they were making an effort to preserve the lull. in Judea, Samaria and Jerusalem "popular resistance" violence continues.

This past week no rocket hits from the Gaza Strip were identified in Israeli territory. On the other hand according to the Israel Security Agency annual report, in 2013 there was a significant increase in the scope of terrorist activity in Judea, Samaria and Jerusalem.

This past week two mortar shells were fired into Israeli territory, one landing near an IDF force. In response the Israeli Air Force attacked two rocket launchers hidden underground in the northern Gaza Strip. On November 13, 2013, an IDF soldier was stabbed to death on a bus in the northern Israeli city of Afula. Hamas held a military parade in Gaza City to mark the first anniversary of Operation Pillar of Defense, displaying a long-range Hamas-manufactured M75 rocket. In our assessment, the objective was to deter Israel from launching another operation.

Information on The Palestinian Islamic Jihad
The Palestinian Islamic Jihad is the second largest and most important terrorist organization in the Gaza Strip. It was established in the Gaza Strip in the 1970s by students studying in Egypt, members of the Muslim Brotherhood, and headed by Dr. Fathi Shqaqi. Inspired by the Islamic Revolution in Iran, the Palestinian Islamic Jihad has a radical fundamentalist Sunni Muslim ideology, and seeks for the immediate "liberation" of Palestine through jihad (holy war) and the establishment of a Muslim Palestinian state. The Palestinian Islamic Jihad rejects any arrangement or agreement with Israel.
The Palestinian Islamic Jihad views terrorism as the only way to advance its goals. It is exclusively a terrorist organization and does to invest its resources in social or welfare activities for the Palestinian population.
The Palestinian Islamic Jihad has a military-terrorist wing called the Jerusalem Brigades which carries out terrorist attacks against Israel, including suicide bombing attacks. Today the Palestinian Islamic Jihad focuses primarily on rocket attacks, among them attacks with long-range rockets and mortar shells launched from the Gaza Strip.
The Palestinian Islamic Jihad has been designated as a terrorist organization by the United States.
The Palestinian Islamic Jihad's leadership is permanently located in Syria. The Palestinian Islamic Jihad is pro-Iranian and receives extensive support from Tehran.
